1/ If you're opening your online wallet for #GivingTuesday, please consider helping me out as I fight for govt transparency, liberate documents, and FOIA like crazy.

I'm going to recap some highlights from 2018, so please bear with my self-promotion....
2/ My work makes a difference. Just recently, my efforts got the National Archives to change its decades-old process for handling records-destruction requests from agencies.
.
3/ NARA has started posting requests for the first time ever & they tell me they're planning to start posting all of them in the near future.

They specifically credit the interest that I generated in the Interior Dept's huge records-destruction request for this change.

UCANR trains Master Gardeners to be a source of fact-based advice on gardening, including food gardening, sustainable methods of landscaping & pest control for free to every Californian. This is a vital service esp to poor people who grow their groceries. #GivingTuesday
There are LOADS of worthy organizations that could use your help on #GivingTuesday or any other day of the year. I'm going to highlight a few that I feel don't get much attention, some of whom are very shy in their fundraising, like UCANR.
.@UCSouthCoastREC conserves genetic diversity for avocado, persimmons, dragonfruit & other crops. They research, do outreach to the public (tasting days!), and host a demonstration garden for drought-tolerant landscaping. #genebanks #GivingTuesday donate.ucanr.edu/pages/south-co… Photo of persimmons in a basket that have been labeled with their variety names in white paint.

Did you know that military families frequently struggle with debt — and when they do, it raises their risk for depression, substance abuse and suicide? That equation affects a lot of people in the communities our newsrooms serve — and it’s one we can help change.
We’ve launched The #WarWithin Initiative in partnership with @RIPMedicalDebt, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that buys medical debt in bulk, for pennies on the dollar — and erases it.
@RIPMedicalDebt The money we raise will be used specifically to buy and abolish the medical debt of servicemembers, veterans and their families around the country. Each family we help will receive a letter telling them their debt has been forgiven, and they never have to worry about it again.

Hi frens! It’s #givingtuesday and I want to tell you about two (non-mushing) fundraising efforts that mean a lot to me. A goofy sled dog with an overbite stares at the camera, holding out his paw so it looks like he’s taking a selfie
1. MacDowell colony, which offers fellowships for artists, made a huge difference in our lives. It gave me a safe home to finish writing ICE CUBE, which was—to put it lightly—a terrifying process. It’s a haven for vital art, writing, and community. A gift.
It’s also where @QuinceMountain and I got engaged!

So I’m gonna be sharing a personal story today. When I was in high school, my family and I went on vacation in Morocco. We went to experience the culture, try new food, and visit historical sites. We thought it was going to be just like any ordinary vacation, until it wasn’t.
On my family’s second day in Morocco, we went to visit an orphanage in Meknes, where my aunt was just adopting her infant child. We were overjoyed to welcome a new cousin into our family.
As we were leaving, one of the staff members asked if we’d be interested in sponsoring an older child’s education. We wanted to help in any way we could, so of course, we agreed.

This #GivingTuesday, an awareness is rising.

We don't just need more giving. We need less ruthless taking.

We don't just need the rich to do good. We need them to do less harm.

We don't just need the powerful donating. We need them stepping off backs. nytimes.com/2018/08/24/opi…
As recently as the last #GivingTuesday, the conversation we had about giving was very different. In this moment of the #techlash, phony billionaire populism, and existential threats to democracy, there is a spreading recognition that giving back is not going to save us.
"Philanthropy is commendable," the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary."

That is the mindset we should bring to #GivingTuesday.

Last week, USCIS issued two new memos that are going to affect *all* immigration applications. That includes green cards, fiancé visas, H-1B's, citizenship, work permits, extensions and changes of status - the whole nine yards.
The first memo says that if an application is denied, and that denial leaves the applicant without lawful immigration status, the applicant will be placed in removal proceedings (deportation.)

The second memo says that if an application is filed incompletely, without certain required evidence, then USCIS has the right to deny the application *without* requesting further evidence (commonly known as an "RFE.")
