1. A few days ago @i_m_m wrote a wonderful story about McKinsey helping the Trump administration's immigration policy implementation. I looked into *why* McKinsey is so embedded into government operations. mattstoller.substack.com/p/why-taxpayer…
2. The immigration cruelty is critical, with McKinsey fighting with ICE staff to deny food and medicine to detainees. The driving incentive for McKinsey was to embed itself into the political center of ICE to grab cash. It's a story of corruption *and* cruelty.
3. McKinsey is everywhere in gov't, and their business is to charge a lot for pedantic advice. It's also very expensive. A 23-year old McKinsey consultant charges the gov't $56,707 a week, or $2,948,764 per year. Here's a McKinsey schedule published by a government investigator.

3. The basic theory is as follows. Silicon Valley is a result of fairly open IP rules from the 1950s to the 1970s. Antitrust suits against AT&T, IBM, Xerox, RCA, etc divested patents and know-how from monopolists to entrepreneurs.

1. This story is basically pre-written garbage that shouldn't have passed a competent editor, but there's merit in one part of it. Democratic voters largely do not see corporate power as part of politics. They see it as a problem, but not a political problem.
2. Breaking up big tech is really popular in general. It's also part of a broader frame of who governs, big banks, big pharma, etc. But does that mean Democrats vote based on corporate power? No. vox.com/policy-and-pol…
3. Barack Obama was highly deferential to corporate power and he will probably become the first billionaire ex-President. Democrats love him because they don't think that's a problem. They basically want their leaders to do good things, but not to fight bad things.

Labour has every right to want an election. We need an election. Given our politics is collapsing, we will absolutely have one.

But please, please, if Johnson calls one this Thursday, do not vote for it. We can’t go to polls on Oct 17 with no-deal hanging over us 2 weeks later.
Johnson will be under immense pressure to commit to no-deal. He can’t negotiate a new deal during election campaign, and anyway, EU wouldn’t cave into him even if he could. No-deal platform also eliminates Brexit Party threat. He might well lose - but the risk is far too high.
Now is the time for the Opposition to take control. First make sure a plan is in place to force an extension request, and have a back-up in case EU declines or Johnson refuses their offer. Put it in law. Then hold election. Don’t allow Johnson to dictate this on his own terms.
