1. The sergeant who was killed in Houston by gunfire was dispatched after a call came in “from a female who advised dispatchers that her boyfriend was assaulting her and that he was armed with two weapons” per Acevedo—sergeant reportedly exited his vehicle with no guns drawn.
2. Person who killed the cop in Houston had a “lengthy criminal history” — politicians have taken positions on gun background checks but should women (and men) be able to obtain free criminal background checks on the people they are dating? Would this reduce domestic violence?
3. Violence Against Women Act was co-sponsored by Joe Biden and signed by Bill Clinton but its 2012 renewal was opposed by some Republicans, who objected to extending protections to same-sex couples and undocumented immigrants claiming visas on grounds of domestic violence.

So...
cops care about domestic violence when it gets one of them killed; continue to do nothing about 40% DV rate amongst cops.

Also cops persist in arresting both people even when it’s clear that one’s injured & other has bruised knuckles; cops do not follow up for injury evidence; cops persist in not believing victims; cops remove victims from their homes while leaving pets, children, elders vulnerable.
So call me cynical, but I don’t see cops being serious bulwarks against domestic violence... until they have to pay out a pension and go to a funeral.

So yeah, Congress needs to pass VAWA.
Cops need better training & way more internal policing.
40% DV rate. >1% conviction.
