There’s a lot of debate on the Citizenship Amendment Bill & that’s a good thing. That’s what healthy democracies do. Is the bill perfect? I don’t know. Are the fears unfounded? I don’t know. (1/n)
But what I do know is that in a country where people are lynched on the suspicion of carrying a certain animal’s meat, mostly because the person belongs to a certain religion, the contents of the bill might make life difficult for a lot of people. (2/n)
The infestation of fake news, misunderstandings & miscommunications in the country means that there is a real danger of people misinterpreting the bill as something that dilutes the Muslims’ claim to India’s citizenship despite being Indians. (3/n)
For all you know, there will be a whatsapp forward with fake news which will say Muslims are no longer citizens of the country. You might call this an over reaction but you’ve seen what happens around us everyday. (4/n)
More often than not, we the people interpret government’s decisions basis the intent on display. I just feel what’s at display is not the best of intentions by the Government. You can have all your differences with people of certain community. (5/n)
But if the combination of CAB & NRC takes even one innocent life, it’s not right. Amit Shah will write his legislatures and go back to his plush retirement house whenever he wants to but it’s the people of the country that will have to go through the suffering. (6/n)
