If you were at the #IODP Town Hall last night at #AGU2019 and saw the acronym e-ODP, I'll explain:
eODP is an NSF- @EarthCube funded effort to, in simple terms, put ocean drilling stratigraphy (litho- & chrono-) into @UWMacrostrat and microfossils into @PaleoDB. But there's more!

eODP operates under the assumption that stratigraphy is the key data underlying ALL scientific ocean drilling data. The age and environmental setting for deposition is required to understand the context of other data we'd like to include in meta-analytical studies.

The @UWMacrostrat API allows other systems to utilize it's data (e.g., @flyovergeo) so the plan is to use it as a nexus for scientific ocean drilling data, augmenting the stratigraphic understanding with other data, using it like scaffolding to structure the other datasets.

Microfossil data, as well as being useful for the @PaleoDB community (whether they acknowledge that or not!), is a useful test case for that underlying assumption. We also get to take advantage of the years of @PaleoDB development in display and retreival.

Including our data in these two strong databases with existing communities also lets us use code developed by the paleobiological community to examine a multitude of things from sampling biases to sediment distribution AND we can learn from their mistakes and successes!

Our plan for this is to be as comprehensive as possible, ingesting all the avaliable data in the IODP data storage and developing systems to take in postcruise data (which aren't in a unified format).

We also have funds to develop workshops, so watch this space.

Basically, if you want a talk where somebody photoshops 'Stratigraphy' onto the One Ring and 'IODP Community' over Frodo, I'm your guy.
