In honor of #NationalFossilDay today, #EarthCube celebrates some of its #paleo domain projects - partnerships among geoscientists, software engineers, & data experts to develop practices and software tools to help answer critical science questions.

Roughly chronologically:
.#EarthCube started with a set of @NSF_GEO funded workshops, hosted by leading geoscientists with end users in their own fields, to first gather science needs. Result: priorities for critical questions in 24 domains + overall summary. Paleogeoscience here: earthcube.org/sites/default/…
@NSF_GEO Priorities coming out of the 2013 end-user workshop went into a 2015 @NSF RCNetwork, Cyberinfrastructure for Paleogeosciences (C4P), to share community info, recommend best practices, work with repositories, and inform tool development. Summary: earthcube.org/sites/default/…
@NSF_GEO @NSF With community needs and initial guidance established, 3 related longer-term EarthCube Integrative Activities were started in 2015, funded by @NSF GEO and CI. These projects are known as LinkedEarth, EarthLifeConsortium API, and ePANDDA. More on each:
@NSF_GEO @NSF .@Linked_Earth has worked to crowdsource data curation and standards development in #paleoclimatology to allow these scientists to curate their own data in ways that enable cutting-edge analytical methods. Their latest report was highlighted by @theAGU :
@NSF_GEO @NSF @Linked_Earth @theAGU The EarthLife Consortium API project worked to create a behind-the-scenes software tool to take a single query and send it out to multiple #paleo databases. Much wrangling of different subdomain terminology, data standards, & repository infrastructures!

@NSF_GEO @NSF @Linked_Earth @theAGU Next in the #EarthCube #paleo tools group, @ePANDDA_API pulls together specimen and occurrence records in time and space for BOTH fossils #NationalFossilDay and modern organisms. Examples of what the software tool does with @PaleoDB and @iDigBio here: epandda.org
@NSF_GEO @NSF @Linked_Earth @theAGU @ePANDDA_API @PaleoDB @iDigBio Progress in science is informed by challenges! Lessons learned crafting tools led to the @NSF @EarthCube Throughput Project to link repositories such as #paleo @neotomadb with other data resources. Work to be highlighted in an upcoming talk by @sjGoring :
