I’m reading the most important book you’ve never heard of.

Why am I reading this? All my roads lead to self-deception:

It’s why patients don’t change their behavior, #hcldr ignore science, politicians perpetuate inequity, etc.

Follow along, I’ll tweet notes as I read.
1/ Most of us (esp in healthcare) are stuck in rationalism (Plato): failure to behave is due to inadequate understanding.

Ignores hedonism and it’s implications: we want to feel good! Also we ignore something not mentioned in this book, behavioral economics.
Self protection is aroused by providing feedback about failure
3/ Pervasive evidence exists of a self serving bias: we take credit for success, and blame others/circumstances out of our control for failures.
4/Self deception: “motivated self-construal”. Difference between how people behave and construals they place in order to maintain favorable self images. Sounds like rationalization to me!
5/ Self protection in...

Racism: we scapegoat to feel better about ourselves. Lynching increased when price of cotton dropped.

Heath: Mortality thoughts —>one of two rxns: either positive health behaviors or defensiveness. My question is which one for any given person and why
