THREAD: Someone swiped my debit card number when I was in NYC back in November. Here's what happened and what I found out.
Upon coming home from NYC in Nov, I found someone had gotten my debit card number somehow. There were a couple of pre-authorizations on my card that I didn't make listed as VERMA ENTERPRISES LLC in Edison, NJ. It was auth'd on a weekend, then fake charges of $100+ posted on Mon..
...I did a couple of things. First, I Googled "VERMA ENTERPRISES, LLC" and found out it apparently belonged to a defunct Exxon station in Edison that was known for scamming people, according to its Google reviews.
Then, I called the @EdisonPolice who told me over the phone they could do precisely fuck all about it and couldn't even take a report. So I looked up the LLC and related info in NJ and couldn't find another string to tug on.
So after dealing with my bank, securing my acct and new card, etc., I started to wonder about how someone got the card number to begin with. I went back over the places I used the card during my trip to NYC, and they were limited. Primarily, I used a different card. However...
I did use this card to buy a coffee in Penn Station at Primo Cappuccino, get a haircut, buy something at H&M and for a couple Uber rides in NYC. I was heading back to NYC this week and, despite not really giving a shit any more (like most ppl this prob happens to), I thought...
...maybe - before I left this time, I would retrace my steps, just to see if anything jumped out at me. And if something didn't, I would forget it & life would go on. So, I went to the same shop for a haircut - used his Square card reader, inspected it thoroughly - looked legit.
(Side note: Great head and beard shave from Sergio at Cohen barbershop on 47th & 7th). Ruled that out. Had already ruled out H&M, but went back and looked upstairs where I paid. POS system looked normal, nothing obviously crazy going on.
Before heading back toward Philly, my last stop was the Primo Cappuccino across from the NJ Transit station in Penn Station. I remember I paid at the POS system that was over by the beer and not the ones at the regular bakery counter. I walked up to the bakery counter...
...and inspected the POS machines. Looked normal. Cards were being swiped thin side perpendicular to the screen on both machines. Business as usual. But then...
I walked over to the POS that I paid at -- the little POS system sitting by itself by the beer that faces the Duane Reade. I found something very interesting. The card swiper did NOT look like the rest of them. It swiped cards flat faced, in the same direction as the screen...
...also, it was a different color than the others - and than the machine.

Oh, and it was SCOTCH TAPED TO THE FUCKING MONITOR.

Same monitor screen - same brand of POS - VERY DIFFERENT CARD SWIPER.
So, I inspected to make sure it wasn't a different POS terminal. It wasn't. I took photos and left. That was very early this morning. I don't know if this is where the issue came from, but it sure as fuck looked shady. Since the PD didn't give a fuck and its likely that...
...nobody else has ever bothered to follow through and/or give a fuck, I thought I would punt my story out to my 70,000 followers and see what, if anything, turns up. REMINDER: I am not accusing the guys of Primo Cappuccino of anything. Having said that - what the fuck?
Bonus points for anyone who can take additional pictures of the swiper at PC and/or corroborate any of these findings. Whoever stole my card number prob. gets away with it 99% of the time. I'd love to serve someone up a nice big shitburger here for the holiday.
