Job search strategies after a PhD: a thread. I'm sure lots of people can relate. #phdlife #AcademicChatter #altac 1/
I've interviewed in different countries, for different types of jobs. I've looked through countless job ads in different platforms, and talked with many people 2/
This "brute force" approach doesn't really work. It only makes rejection easier and made me more confused. I can say with confidence that almost all the interviews I had were through targeted networking. Answering to a job ad is less successful than talking to people directly. 3/
Yesterday I had an epiphany that I should have had long ago. I'm deleting all job ads notifications from my email and social media. Looking through job ads made me really anxious. I'll reach out directly instead. 4/
I chose a PhD topic that eventually would give me lots of skills, and it did, but didn't solve some other kinks of job search. Finding a combination of specificity and flexibility is key 5/
I eventually had a couple experiences where I was accepted for a new job but, for different reasons, it didn't become a full time opportunity. The main one for me was always how I could match a job with my values and with the remainder of PhD work 6/
Finishing my PhD was not easy. I defended almost 1 year after my fellowship was over, which meant this year involved some financial sacrifice. I always put having a good defense before finding a new full time job 7/
Now that it's time to be fully open to something new, using the same strategies I was using might not work. So I'm going to be Marie Kondo-ing my job search strategies. 8/
Having had several interviews made me learn a lot about job search and also how to manage expectations, while honoring my values. Job matching involves some compromise. 9/
Curious to hear your thoughts! Plugging some specialists here @AcademicChatter @careerconversa1 @cjohnyrun @FromPhDtoLife but leaving the conversation open to everyone of course :) 10/10
