I would expect it is higher and will be revised up in the coming days/weeks. If not, the number is still very good.

For instance in 2017 the same MasterCard report stated that sales increased by 4.9%. However, on Jan 15, 2018 the much more detailed First Data spendtrend report stated the increase was actually 6.2%
A final point. Gift cards are not counted until they are used which means this next weekend will change the results of total sales as people go shopping with all those gift cards they got for Christmas.

I was at the store today. Why? I have no idea, we all make stupid decisions at times. However, the stores looked like a swarm of locusts just left. I had warned that many companies would be caught flat footed on the supply side if they believed the MSM.

IMO, the sales would have been higher if retailers would have stocked enough inventory to handle the late rush of shoppers. I had money looking for a few gifts the stores literally had almost nothing left. They lost sales today and online can't help them at this late date.
This is the danger of listening to the pathological liars that make up the fake media. They are more concerned with pushing their ideology than informing the public with the data they need to make correct decisions.

Why all the rage at President Trump by the fake media and Democrat party? I think part of it has to do with the fact that President Obama enabled the Marxists and socialists to come out of the closet, to proudly proclaim their marxism and socialism to the world.
For the first time in decades, they felt is was safe to show who they really were. They didn't have to hide their core beliefs anymore during Obama's reign. They felt accepted. For the first time, they didn't have to lie and deceive the people to get elected.
They felt this was now their time. Their arc of history coming down on the pot of gold.

AND then, and then,

They WOKE up on Nov 9th, 2016 and discovered it was all a lie. They discovered the majority of people in 30 out of 50 states rejected their glorious marxism.

Recently, companies like mPesa (Africa) showed that this can be done. Especially, in countries where you're building a completely new infrastructure, not relying on (or mandated to integrate with) legacy payment systems. Those carry onerous compliance & processing costs.

With almost full smartphone saturation, some #fintech players like Simple, even @Square's Cash & @Paypal's @Venmo apps, are able to get to more people. Others like Green Dot prepaid & payday lenders go deeper into servicing this population, but at controversially high fees.
