4gamer's developer best-of-2019 questionnaire is up, gonna pick out whatever catches my eye🇯🇵
Kazuko Sekine (Pachi) from Arcsys chose Ring Fit Adventures as his GOTY

he usually picks poverty fighting games, complete with tech—last year was Shaolin vs. Wutang, the year before was Fight of Gods—but he didn't have much lab time this year, but he does shout out Bayani
more Arcsys dudes:

Daisuke picked Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus as his GOTY, but more broadly, he's just amazed at what's playable on handhelds nowadays & Wolf was but one of many examples

GGXrd Rev2 & Strive director Akira Katano picked Arslan Ash as his person of 2019
SNK's Yasuyuki Oda picked ボクと博物館 / TAP! DIG! MY MUSEUM as his GOTY: "I like offbeat games and dinosaurs, and this game offers both in spades"

he also mentions the Neogeo 30th anniversary, which they'll celebrate, and the Garou MOW anniversary, which they have no plans for
Kadokawa's producer Ichiro Sugiyama picked Idola Phantasy Star Saga as his GOTY, which I completely forgot existed until now

Capcom's Tsukasa Takenaka picked the book Blood, Sweat & Pixels as his media of 2019—I'm out of the loop, I presume it's available in Japanese?
Konami's PC Engine Mini producer Jun Yoshimuro's reader message: "there are still around 600 other PCE games on the shelf, so if the PCE Mini is a success, I'd love to start thinking about 'PC Engine Mini 2'"
Jiro Ishii (who wrote on Shin Sakura Wars, I'm learning) didn't pick a videogame as his GOTY but instead singled out the murder/mystery analog game boom that originated in China and is now making its way to Japan—here's a recent article on this phenom sixthtone.com/news/1004985/m…
Jiro Ishi also chose the sci-fi novel 三体 (officially translated as "The Three-Body Problem") by Chinese author Liu Cixin, published in 2008 and localized into Japanese this year, as his media of 2019, both for its inexplicable mainstream succes & its unique cultural perspective
Mario & Sonic 2020's Naohiro Hirai chose Mega Drive Mini as his GOTY: "I'm shocked they got Yuyu Hakusho & Tetris! when YYH originally came out I'd play with my workmates at lunch every day... now I'm trying to nail the combos from the ending demos & shedding old-man gamer tears"
(btw, he says he's working on a game that'll be out next year... he previously directed Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Chronicle, just sayin)
Virtual-On series producer Juro Watari picked the German boardgame Wingspan as his GOTY, and the Polish bass player Kinga Glyk as someone he paid a lot of attention to, mostly due to this video
Taito's Yuichi Toyama picked Aka to Blue Type R as his GOTY, mostly as a gesture of support to the new arcade format... but aren't they competitors?

(among his representative works is "Herzog (not Zwei)", I guess people bother him about Zwei all the time)
Hideki Kamiya's Airing of Grievances:

a history lesson on Vs. Gradius & Vs. Castlevania

griping @ publishers locking games behind limited-time/preorder promos (100% justified)

complaining that Sega Ages Space Harrier & Outrun don't have the moving chassis mode from 3D Classics
his 2020 resolution & readers message: "same as [producer Atsushi] Inaba (probably, I didn't read it)"
as usual, Yoko Taro signed off with some ridiculous nonsense, this year it's a story about him taking all the participating devs hostage in the 4gamer office and being murdered by a swat team or something
...and that's it for me, I skipped over a ton of people, check it out yourselves if you can

fwiw, Death Stranding was far & away the most popular GOTY pick, followed by Ring Fit Adventures; Fire Emblem, Dragon Quest Walk, Sekiro were also common mentions
