This is nonsense. The UK cut its CO2 emissions by 26% between 2010 and 2018: far more than any other country in the G20. At that rate, the UK will reach net zero in 2040: ten years ahead of the IPCC's target of 2050. #VoteBlueGoGreen
What's likely to deter other countries from following the UK's world-beating 26% cuts in emissions since 2010? That's right - pretending to the world it didn't happen!

By talking down the UK's success, Labour hurt the global fight against climate change.

Sickened by the anti-Semitic graffiti on walls all over Hampstead and Belsize Park this morning. All decent people across Britain stand with our Jewish community - and we must move heaven and earth to eradicate this racist hatred, which was unimaginable just a few years ago.

North Devon is typical of the seats Lib Dems complacently assume will vote for them. So they selected a parliamentary candidate there that thinks North Devon voted 57% for Leave because its residents are 98% white and she thinks lots of its voters are racist. 🤯
North Devon is the Lib Dems’ seventh top target nationally by uniform swing. They held it from 1992 to 2015. If they can’t win it back, the idea of a “Lib Dem surge” is pretty dead. And they can’t win it back if their MP candidate there thinks her own constituents are racists.
Five of the thirteen seats won by the Lib Dems are more white than North Devon. If the Lib Dems openly dismiss North Devon voters as racist because they’re white, let’s see how that goes down in Westmorland & Lonsdale or North Norfolk. #ConservativeGains

India has pledge to reduce its emission intensity (CO₂/GDP) 33-35% from 2005 levels by 2030, leading to a big rise in CO₂ emissions by 2030.

In context, 1.5°C requires a 45% reduction in CO₂ emissions from 2010 levels by 2030, globally!

Yes, India has much lower per capita CO₂ emissions than many countries & is below the world average. But, if 1.5°C or 2°C is the goal, then even countries with low per capita emissions have to reduce emissions...

Yes, US, EU, etc have to do more, so does India, China, etc

Despite impressive growth in solar & wind in India, see lines at the bottom of figure, the Indian energy system is dominated by coal, oil, & biomass.

Coal is still growing strongly in India, despite claims that Indian coal has come to an end.

NEW: We found that all of the $4.9 trillion the oil and gas industry is set to spend on production from new fields is incompatible with limiting warming to 1.5°C - the ambition of the Paris agreement.

We mapped how forecast oil production from existing and new fields compares to the 1.5C pathways, using the @IPCC_CH 1.5C scenarios and data from @RystadEnergy.

As you can see, oil production from existing fields exceeds the 1.5°C pathway - so new oil ≠ compatible. 1/7
And it's the same story for gas - production from existing fields exceeds the 1.5°C pathway until 2032.

So new gas isn't compatible with 1.5°C, at least for the next decade.

Which is a blow for the oil industry's claims that gas is the answer to climate change. 2/7

The @IEA is getting pressure to do a 1.5°C scenario. We have an #IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C #SR15, so why not do a comparison...

As it happens, some IEA scenarios fall in the envelope of 1.5°C scenarios...

* Energy Technology Perspectives 2°C scenario (2DS, not in #SR15 database)
* ETP Beyond 2°C Scenario (B2DS, in database)
* IEA Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS, not in database)
* IEA Faster Transition Scenarios (SDS to net-zero, in database)

The CO₂ emissions from energy & industry (not LUC) for the two IEA scenarios are rather similar to the 1.5°C with no or low overshoot
* IEA B2DS is roughly consistent with 1.75°C warming in 2100 (though, #SR15 does not assess this)
* IEA Faster Transition is assessed as 2°C

Today much of the world's population lives safer, more comfortable, healthier, longer, more productive lives than ever before. And yet, around half of the global population currently lacks access to enough electricity, and 1.2bn people have no access at all. #IPCC 1/n
Global electricity access is rising, which is improving the lives of millions. But this means our decarbonisation challenge is even greater, since we not only have to replace our entire fossil fuel infrastructure, but probably double it to meet rising global energy demand. #IPCC
The question is where will this energy to come from? A: Right now, mainly from #coal. #IPCC

2/ A reminder: natural gas currently accounts for 20% of global energy emissions and is the world’s fastest growing fossil fuel. In the IEA’s current policies scenario, gas demand could increase by ~50% by 2040.

How far is this from a 1.5⁰C pathway?
3/ With coal, the IPCC message is simple: stop burning it. The IPCC pathways show a reduction in coal in primary energy use of 59-78% by 2030, compared to 2010. By 2050 it falls 73-97%.

I feel like driving up some controversy, so how about a thread of Hot Takes/Unpopular Opinions! You know the drill, one like = one take/opinion.

Start easy: the blunt awkwardness/cringe of 'Blurryface' is the point of taking the piss out of Tyler. I stand by my light 9/10.
2. I don't hate Nickelback's 'Dark Horse' - it's easily a record for them at their most tasteless, but the frat-bro swagger of it helps some of their better hooks.
3. 'Fireflies' by Owl City is a genuinely terrific song that captures precocious, starry-eyed wonderment better than few others in the 2000s.

It is SPECTACULARLY lame, but that's why it works.
