THREAD: TOP 10 RAPPLER ARTICLES OF 2019

This year I wrote a total of 54 Rappler pieces, more than I wrote any year prior. Here are the top 10 pieces of 2019 based on the impressions/engagement.
(1) Just how bad was corruption during the Marcos years?

There's renewed interest on the Marcoses these days. This piece, which I wrote before this year's ML declaration anniv, talks about the extent and depth of Marcosian corruption.

(2) Vote for the opposition, you owe it to yourself

Many were shocked by the appalling loss of the opposition in this year's midterm elections. They sorely lacked resources. But in May I made the case why people should vote for them nonetheless.

(3) How the Philippines fell for China’s infamous debt trap

With Duterte's political and economic pivot to China, more and more are getting worried we could be fast burying ourselves in Chinese debt. In this piece I explained whether that's true or not.

(4) China vs Filipino fishermen: Where is Duterte’s ‘tapang at malasakit’?

When China sank fishing boat Gem-Ver in June, Duterte shrugged it off as a "little maritime accident." But our fisherfolk are more vulnerable than the gov't cares to admit.

(5) The poor quality of economic growth under Duterte

Economic growth is not the be-all and end-all of development. Although growth has been fairly respectable under Duterte, it's been jobless, ruthless, voiceless, rootless, and futureless.

(6) How Duterte’s exaggerations worsened the Philippines’ drug problem

In this piece I pointed out that Duterte continues to cite manufactured statistics to justify his bloody war on drugs. In doing so, he's worsening the country's drug problem.

(7) Why jailing kids is not just cruel, it’s stupid too

Recall that early this year Congress aggressively pushed for bills that would send to jail kids as young as 9. In this piece I explained why that policy's inhumane, inefficient, and inequitable.

(8) The pipe dream that is Build, Build, Build

When I saw the detailed status update of BBB projects, I knew instantly I had to write about it. Years after BBB was launched, Duterte's econ team is now realizing they've been overly ambitious about it.

(9) Duterte’s foul attacks on big business: What is he up to?

I wrote this piece just 2 weeks ago, but it landed in the top 10! Duterte's tirades have taken a toll on the stock prices of certain big companies. But why the attacks in the first place?

(10) Dengvaxia scare: How viral rumors caused outbreaks

Doubtless the slew of recent epidemics were caused largely by the Dengvaxia scare propagated by some gov't officials. I'd like to think @persidaacosta blocked me for this piece, but that's a win.

@persidaacosta That's a wrap! 2019 was my most productive year writing for @rapplerdotcom, and I'd like to thank my editors @chayhofilena and @glendamgloria for the mentorship; @mariaressa for her unwavering support; and @NessFiestan for the amazing cover art. 🧡

Here's to more pieces in 2020!
