The song most associated with Gandhi is Vaishnava Janato, a bhajan that displays Hindu faith but is not communal. It's still sung in anti communal gatherings & protests.
So why should Muslims not raise slogans that display their faith without being communal?

At protest against anti Christian violence, I've known Christians to recite from the Bible, sing hymns. Haven't seen liberals object. Nor to (Hindu inspired) lamp lighting at functions. So is the discomfort for public display of faith in movements reserved for Muslims?
This is a movement where young people are filling secularism with new life. They are FINE with Muslims being Muslim, with Hindus being Hindu (here's looking at you Mr Tharoor), Sikhs being Sikh, Christians being Christian. Also fine with people being atheist, rationalist.
🙏🏾 Please let's all learn from this movement. Let's not impose tired old notions on this new, developing movement. Learn from the movement. Question your own assumptions & discomforts.

That does not mean that Germans & world citizen s upholding the Rights of Man cannot support the Jews against fascism. Or that Hindus and Indians upholding the Idea of India cannot support Muslims against fascism. They can, and must. BUT +
But what they must NEVER do is object to the Jewishness of those attacked as Jews, or the Muslimness of those attacked as Muslims, or Christianness of those attacked as Christians. 🙏🏾 If you learn 1 thing from this movement let it be this. Admit your mistake if you've done so.
