Rita Hayworth's bumpers might be on the scrap heap, but her gams are on a 1939-41 Lincoln Continental convertible #DavesCarIDService
btw, the rear trunk mounted spare on these cars are why they are generically called "Continental Kits." It was a styling cue on Lincoln Continentals all the way to 1988.
also btw: it may be an apocryphal story, but some accounts say the Margarita cocktail was named after Rita Hayworth (whose birth name was Margarita Cansino) by Agua Caliente racetrack bartender Danny Negrete
btw 3: '39-'41 Continentals are lovely, but the greatest Rita Hayworth car is this 1953 Ghia-bodied Cadillac, which won Best In Show at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance
btw 4: that Cadillac was purchased for her by her estranged husband Prince Ali Aga Khan, apparently as a peace offering during their divorce. Not a production model, it appeared at the 1953 Paris Auto Show
btw 5: the car is owned by the Petersen Museum in LA and is often on display there, along with several other Ghia-bodied US cars. In the 50s Ghia made concept cars with several US brands, including Cadillac, Chrysler, Plymouth and Hudson
btw 6: I have to correct myself on the original ID, it isn't a convertible, further research says a 1941 Continental hardtop that actually belonged to Rita Hayworth
btw 7: Hmm. Photo source claims it is Hayworth's car, but plates say Georgia. Hayworth was living in Hollywood at the time, but was married to oilman Ed Judson who lived in OK/TX (they divorced in Feb 1942). Pic is I think Palm Springs. I am dubious that it's her car now.
btw 8: hmm hmm. Left is full pic of Hayworth w/ the GA plated 41 Linc, right is a 41 Linc that recently sold at auction as Hayworth's personal car. Also has GA plates, but that might be b/c it's now in GA. Has bumpers too, but might've been added back in restoration
btw 9: after the war, Rita Hayworth owned another Lincoln Continental during her marriage to yet another husband, Orson Welles - a much homelier 1947 in "pace car yellow" (Continental was the pace car at the 1946 Indy 500).
btw 10: the auction 41 Lincoln description says "believed to be Rita Hayworth's car" but is kinda weasely and offers no conclusive documentation
btw 11: another pic of the thread-starter Hayworth 41 Lincoln with the "7W" California plates, but with bumpers attached
btw 12: this thread already has too many btws in it, so the mystery of Rita Hayworth's 1941 Lincoln and why she got divorces after every new car will remain unsolved for now
I felt compelled to add this to the Rita Hayworth car ID thread. Gotta say having Rita Hayworth and Farrah Fawcett as ex-students is pretty impeccable bragging rights for UT
In case you were wondering what inspired Jessica Rabbit.
