As it is #FolkloreThursday (apparently?) now seems a good time to mention that my hometown has not just ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ but ๐™ฉ๐™ฌ๐™ค big legends which are fairly well known. These are:

๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜“๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ is a fairly traditional hero vs. "dragon" story which has the odd distinction that in this instance the "dragon" is inadvertently created by the "hero".

I think it resembles a truncated version of ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ง, but your mileage may vary.

๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜“๐˜ข๐˜ฅ is a ghost story with its roots firmly in the Late Middle Ages and associated with the (now almost completely ruined) Hylton Castle. In later years the ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜“๐˜ข๐˜ฅ is alleged to have terrified miners returning home from the night shift.

Whatever the truth behind these legends, they make for compelling tales nonetheless and are well worth reading about if they pique your fancy. Indeed, if you wait a bit longer I may just end up making a video or two about them....

(1/10) This is something I have been debating about posting for a while but I have decided to go ahead and just do it. About two weeks ago I was very foolish and ended up not taking anti-depressants for several days.
(2/10) This wasnโ€™t even a conscious choice โ€“ I simply mismanaged my medication. I had ran out of them at a bad time and realised too late that I wouldnโ€™t be able to collect more until quite a while after I ran out.
(3/10) Doubling down on my mistake, instead of trying to correct my first error I instead blithely assumed that I would be fine for the few days I would have to go without.

(1/14) So this is going to be my first true long post to Twitter and I am also covering the debate surrounding the banning of plastic straws. As such, I am rather nervous and I can only hope that this turns out alright! #StrawBan
(2/14) I want to focus on an alternative material used in drinking straws. This material is chitosan, which is also sold under the name of โ€œREPAโ€ amongst others. Chitosan is a biodegradable polymer made from renewable materials used to make flexible straws. #StrawBan
(3/14) Firstly, I shall cover the science. Chitosan is a modified form of chitin. Chitin is taken from renewable sources and deacetylated. This typically occurs through treating it with sodium hydroxide in an aqueous solution. #Chemistry #MaterialsScience

Maybe now is a good time to mention that Netflix had to shut down comments on the trailer for #TheFamilyNetflix because it was overwhelmed by anti-Semitic trolls.
When I published THE FAMILY in 2008, anti-Semitism was a fringe element of the pushback. Now, in response to #TheFamilyNetflix, it began like a tsunami and has continued as a strong current.
The anti-Semitic swarm against #TheFamilyNetflix continued here on twitter against me & in my email inbox. To be clear this wasnโ€™t #TheFamily, the anti-Semitism of which tends toward the genteel; it was a new wave of anti-Semites looking for anything to hate at all.

Actually, let me be a little more specific here as to why I tend to look askance at the output of the John L Thornton Center at the Brookings Institute on the question of US-China relations. Time for a thread!
Let's start with Mr Thornton himself. He is the executive chairman of Barrick Gold, the world's largest gold mining company. He was also head of Brookings' board of trustees from 2003-2018. He has given Brookings a lot of money, which is why its China center is named for him.
Mr Thornton has been all-in on the PRC for a long time. In 2003 he became the first non-Chinese full professor at Tsinghua University since the founding of the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China in 1949. He still holds several senior positions there.

Today marks what would have been #StaffordReppโ€™s 100th birthday. He had quite a bit of work in early television, but his most famous role is no doubt that of Chief Oโ€™Hara, the bumbling head of police on the 1960s Batman TV Series with Adam West.
Born April 26, 1918 in San Francisco, CA, Repp went to Lowell High School and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Post-military service, he began acting mid-life, starting out creating sound effects in TVโ€™s early days.
