Hang on to your keyboards, kids, because today marks what would have been the 100th birthday of actor Stafford Repp and I've got a THREAD a'comin. Begorrah!
Today marks what would have been #StaffordRepp’s 100th birthday. He had quite a bit of work in early television, but his most famous role is no doubt that of Chief O’Hara, the bumbling head of police on the 1960s Batman TV Series with Adam West.
Born April 26, 1918 in San Francisco, CA, Repp went to Lowell High School and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Post-military service, he began acting mid-life, starting out creating sound effects in TV’s early days.
Adam West has been noted as saying that Neil Hamilton (Commissioner Gordon) was not a fan of the Irish accent Repp used for the character on Batman and that their on-screen relationship was much friendlier than they were in real life.
After the cancellation of Batman in 1968, #StaffordRepp invested his money in a chain of car washes, which was a very profitable success for him.
#StaffordRepp turned up in a lot of other shows throughout the 1960s and 70s, including The Twilight Zone, My Favorite Martian, M*A*S*H and many more.
Shortly before his death in 1974, #StaffordRepp filmed scenes for the Orson Welles film The Other Side of the Wind, finally slated for a release from Netflix this year.
#StaffordRepp died of a heart attack on November 5, 1974 while at the Hollywood Park Racetrack. After his death, his sister, a television writer, established the Stafford Repp Memorial Scholarship for alumni of his alma mater, Lowell High School.
And if you want to know the secret to unmarketable ideas, know that I’m the guy who last year unironically pitched DC on a #Batman66 Stafford Repp Centennial Special in the style of old 80 Page giants, based on a mock up cover I made using photos from the show.
I actually did write out the plots for each of those stories, focusing around #StaffordRepp's Chief O’Hara. Since that pitch obviously didn’t hit its mark, I feel like now seems a good time to share those plots, good or bad, with the world in honor of Repp’s centennial.
"Justice, Over Easy" where a seating error puts O'Hara at the same diner table as a recently paroled egghead. Over the top distractions and barbs from the villain as he tries to keep the Chief from spotting his henchmen stealing a priceless cookbook on display at the diner.
“The Lawman of 19th Century Gotham” - Where #StaffordRepp's Chief O'Hara is accidentally sent back in time to the old west via Batman & Robin's old friend Dr. Nichols and has a showdown with Shame's great granddaddy.
I was especially proud of this last one not only for the west motif and bringing Dr. Nichols into the 66 fold, but also because it would have involved The Getaway Genius, a villain from the 60s comics that I thought would have been perfect for John Astin in live action.
"What a Jam!" - While in the evidence room grabbing exhibits for a trial against The Joker and the Puzzler, O'Hara accidentally knocks over a vat of Joker Jam trapping he and Gordon to the floor. Gordon was already made at him for moving the Commish's car from its reserve spot.
"The Return of Duke and Buzzy" - When the Dynamic Duo go missing after judging a charity music contest, O'Hara and Gordon go undercover once again as Duke & Buzzy to rescue the caped crusaders at a shaggy-haired music club run by The Minstrel and Chandell.
Lastly, "The Penguin's Phone Phlub" sees a groggy O'Hara get a phone call in the middle of the night that helps prevent a kidnapping attempt on Commissioner Gordon. All because the Penguin dialed the wrong number!
So there you have it! A centennial twitter thread celebration to the late #StaffordRepp and his most famous role, Gotham City's Police Chief O'Hara and, Saints preserve us, the alternate universe where we might have had a Stafford Repp Centennial Comic Special! :) Mother Macree!
