Gov. Phil Bryant's claim that Mississippi "just got out of racism that existed til the 70s" is interesting, considering he graduated from a seg academy in 1971 that the white supremacist Citizens Council (colloquially: White Citizens Council) set up to combat integration. 👇🏻

Here's what WJ Simmons, a CC leader who operated Phil Bryant's seg academy, said about McCluer High in 1985:

"Race was a motivating factor ... admitting blacks lowers educational standards. Racial mixing is wrong when it's forced. If it's not forced, it's not likely to occur."
