A bunch here. Pretty good coverage Glad to see Weintraub perspective in here finally to balance out the always present perspectives of Facebook current and former employees. /1
“They have a real responsibility here, and they’re just shirking it,” Ms. Weintraub said. “They don’t want to acknowledge that something they’ve created is contributing to the decline of our democracy, but it is.” /2
This is the key point on microtargeting which makes the decision to not fact check (again, I can understand that part) a toxic one to democracy and public debate. It actually destroys the authenticity of Zuckerberg’s BS on voice and free speech. /3
I don’t agree with @kevinroose on this common FB talking point that political ads isn’t enough revenue to make decision about $. Nearly every state, congress are proposing privacy laws. Any give on any ground is a slippery slope for Facebook against ENTIRE business model. /4
Same reason Facebook was opposed to changes to law protecting it from content liability - even for protecting against sex trafficking. Any any change here is risk to Facebook’s entire business. See their 10K risks table. /5
So I actually mostly agree with Stamos on this but put it back on protecting core biz model. certainly political leverage is a nice secondary benefit to making that happen -> Don’t give any ground on myth that all personalization is positive and keep leverage w White House. /6
ps can we please: (1) stop describing Stamos as leaving after the 2016 election. I thought he left in late 2018. It makes it sound like he left in protest after election. He didn’t. (2) get clear answer if he has anti defamation language or anything affecting his POV. Thx. /end
