The most ridiculously complicated area of law where the unnecessary complexity literally costs lives because e.g. asylum seekers can't hope to understand the law.
Just a tiny example. "Appendix FM" of the Immigration Rules which is about the human right to family life. Just check out the way the rules are labelled - not numbered, randomly labelled with weird codes! gov.uk/guidance/immig…

A little understood fact is that this is a central part of the hostile environment: matters not if you have a right to asylum or appeal if the rules are so complicated that you need a (good) lawyer to apply them, and legal aid only available for limited number of cases

Did anyone else practically melt listening to the Russian opposition leader on Today saying that the 'referendum' which Putin was mooting was just a 'sociological survey' not a real referendum because a real referendum changes the law?
He was saying it like 'god you Brits must understand how undemocratic this all is' but the joke is on us because the Brexit referendum was no more than a socialogical study anyway.

Appreciate THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE has spoken and I'll stop now
And the presenter was saying "but that is a referendum.. isn't it?' and I was MELTING

Some interesting things going on in the Labour movement. Shows how a tiny bit of leadership (shown by leadership candidates but obviously not the actual leader) can send antisemitism deniers into a complete panic
The pledge which has caused the most controversy is the one which requires the party to engage with mainstream Jewish representative orgs and, implicitly, not JVL who are the focus of this front page. This is right - JVL have played a pernicious role in this sad affair
Any leader who takes this issue seriously must disassociat from them and any other orgs which have perpetrated the denial narrative. Labour Representative Committee, Lab against the witch hunt etc. The problem for the ‘labour left’ is these are part of their institutional fabric

Wow the list is illuminating - Jewish orgs must condemn Israel before they are 'permitted' to advise on anti-Jewish racism. A quid pro quo not demanded of other communities and is itself antisemitic as it is holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel
As per the IHRA working definition of antisemitism. Not a perfect document by any means but "Rachel Swindon"'s list is a very good example of why this can sometimes become antisemitic. It's really saying racism is OK against Jews who won't "condemn Israel" holocaustremembrance.com/working-defini…
For those wondering what on earth this list is about - it comes from a group of Labour supporters who I think genuinely believe that any complaint about antisemitism is purely and therefore disingenuously a factional attack on the 'left' of the party

1/ BREAKING: #ASYLUM LAW

As #impeachment dominates the news cycle the war on #asylum still rages... and the Trump administration just dropped another daisycutter.

This whole thing is *far* worse than this headline might suggest, so let's just into it.
2/ 1st, remember that "criminal aliens" is one of the Trump administration's favorite phrases, intentionally used to associate crime w/refugees, asylum seekers, &Central Americans generally. (MEDIA: This is a very knowing psy-ops campaign; please don't perpetuate it)
3/ International law *does* allow member states of the Refugee Convention to restrict the right of asylum to those convicted of "particularly serious crimes" and even return such people there even knowing they face will face persecution. It's clearly for extreme cases.

1/ I just read through the new proposed rules for #asylum-based employment authorization while waiting in #immigrationcourt with a 16-year-old asylum seeker, and I'm just so tired and angry that this seems like a good time to tell you how bad it is.

2/ This opening sentence says everything.

In Trumpworld, the only possible reason anyone would file an application for #asylum is to get a work permit, and most of them are probably criminals.
3/ Under current regulation, #asylum applicants can't file for a work permit until their cases have been pending 180 days. (Under current processing times, they receive it about 30 days later.) This rule would double that to a full year.

1/ The Trump administration is about to achieve its longtime goal of setting up an #asylum firewall in Central America which will offshore our treaty obligations the worst possible places imaginable.

Let's look ahead to what this actually means in practice.
2/ Once Honduras inevitably signs, we'll have created a sort of buffer zone through which all asylum seekers coming from south of Mexico will have to seek asylum first. (Guatemalans will still be able to seek asylum at our border per current agreements.) Out of sight, out of mind
3/ Stephen Miller and other Trump #immigration policy minions have made it explicitly clear that there is only one purpose for all of this: to get these teeming masses yearning to breathe free as far from our golden door as possible, with no regard for their lives or the law

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).

2/ Important context: As head of @TheJusticeDept, the Attorney General has final say over all cases before the administrative #immigration courts. AG may snatch a case away from the Board of Immigration Appeals anytime and decide it himself by directing BIA to refer it to him.
3/ Here is the 2014 BIA holding--upholding precedent from 1989--which the AG was so intent on getting to his own desk. It may not mean much to anyone who had the good sense not to go to law school, but take a shot. (No, really: *take an actual shot* and give it a try.)
