When I made the comment yesterday that 80% of the jobs available never get listed,
I got a lot of requests in the comments and in my DM's for more info on how to crack this 'hidden job market'.
This is going to be a long thread
However, let's get started with the most important part:
Getting your mind right.
Every accomplishment begins in your mind.
So, if you've been looking for awhile, and your energy is dropping,
Let's go!
A) Start by figuring out the *Exact* job you want. Pay, benefits, what you do....EVERYTHING.
-Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill;
-The Success Principles by @JackCanfield
-How to fail at almost everything by @ScottAdamsSays
(shout out to @EdLatimore on this one because he has a whole chapter dedicated to crack addicts and why and how they can out work you.)
-The Lazy Man's Way to Riches by Joe Karbo
ONE of these will get your started. We just want clarity.
He is correct. This is a SYSTEM for getting a job, and then getting a better one.
But, that doesn't mean you don't need to know what 'ideal' looks like.
So, spend a little time here.
-Let's dial in your exercise and lose weight if you're extremely overweight;
The reasons for this are
1. Let's face it, we judge others by appearance, so this will help.
If you're out of work, it can be EXTREMELY stressful, so this will help you cope as well.
Now, let's talk about your clothes:
You can follow @WellBuiltStyle or @tannerguzy for tips if you're a guy...no idea who to get advice from if you're a girl.
Anyone want to help out in the comments for suggestions? Thanks.
'But, Roooo-oooon (in whiny voice), I don't have any money, or I just want THE secret to the hidden jobs',
Stop.
This stuff is important. Those tips are coming, I promise.
But, we've got to fix YOU first to make you attractive to employers.
You can get clothes inexpensively if you need to, and you can find a cheap place to workout.
Hell, @PlanetFitness is like 10 bucks a month, or there are guys on here that teach bodyweight stuff.
Until you find a job, that IS your job.
Treat it like one.
Start on time, get dressed up, work a full day.
There is a reason most of the great writers had 'writing clothes'.
👆
Read this tweet again, it's one of the most important.
Until you find a job, that IS your job.
Treat it like one.
Start on time.
Get dressed up.
Work a full day.
Let's talk about what to do if you're totally broke:
2 things:
First, get a job in food service, preferably high end, front of house, or high end catering.
THIS is a huge life hack right here for a couple of reasons:
First, restaurants are EVERYWHERE.
I GUARANTEE it.
Why? Because a restaurant needs a huge staff, and most employees are total flakes.
So the turnover is endless.
Walked home with 20$ every night and a free beer.
They actually gave me cigarettes too, but I was never a fan.
By 19, I was Maitre D' of a 5 star French place on the off nights.
No.
I worked hard and showed up on time and sober.
That was enough for career advancement back then, and probably still is.
Oh, and I would walk home with about $120 every night (this was over 30 years ago) PLUS I would get a paycheck every 2 weeks.
Back then, 3 martini lunches were an actual thing, although to this day, I have no idea how anybody got anything done in the afternoon.
I got job offers about once a month from everything from Unical (the gas company) to real estate offices to the PennySaver because their execs would come in for lunch every week and got to know me
(See where this is going?)
The 2nd reason this is a life hack is because you get money almost immediately, as I already mentioned.
I highly recommend you work in one, especially if you're young.
I'll throw some links up to courses I've bought later this am and recommend, but there is a TON of wisdom on here.
Use it to get on your feet. Plus, the tax benefits of having a biz are crazy good.
-Figure out the EXACT job you want, or at least the basics like salary, benefits, work environment, etc.
-Read one of the books I've recommended if you haven't.
-Dial in your clothes and fitness. Even a small improvement here will be huge.
And, if you're totally broke,
-Take anything you can find, just to get some money coming in the door, or start a side hustle.
-I recommend restaurants for the quick cash, flexible schedule, and short shifts (usually 5 or 6 hours)
if you have left a job and have a 401k or IRA from there, I wouldn't leave it there.
Most of those have very limited options. You're much better off with a self-directed IRA.
-You have a much bigger choice of options, including using it to invest in real estate;
-You can break into it if you get really desperate, although you'll have to pay taxes and likely penalties.
Also: when you finally get your dream job, if they offer a 401k, enroll in it as soon as you can, but ONLY put in what they'll match.
DM me for what to do with the rest.
There is much, much more to come.
I just noticed that #YouShouldntHireMeBecause is trending.
If you're out of a job, start at the beginning and work your way down.
Also, if you're not following me, you should, cause there is more to come.
