If you're just tuning in, on Friday, I made the accurate comment that
80% of the available jobs are never listed.
Yesterday, I put out Part 1: Mindset.
ICYM,I, here it is:
Assuming you have no idea what to do, I'm going to start with the basics, and then we'll move into how to crack that 'hidden' job market.
So, if this starts out a little slow, just hang in there.
The rest will drop over the next couple of days, so you'll have everything by Tuesday.
(Wait.....you DID read the mindset stuff, right?
If not, go do it NOW. It's good.)
Because there is such a variance here, I can't really give guidance here in a thread, but have someone else look at it.
-Make sure no typos (obvious, but it gets skipped a LOT)
Pro tip: Include any relevant hobbies or volunteer work.
In other words, 'Improved company efficiency' tells me nothing.
'Reduced department expenses by 42%, thereby increasing profits by 1,256,453 in 6 months' DOES tell me something.
Next, let's work on your LinkedIn profile:
You need a good headshot taken preferably by a pro.
@peter_hurley is the absolute MAN on this.
His @YouTube videos are legendary.
His company on Twitter is @headshotcrew
Back to what I said earlier, we are a VISUAL society, so this step is important.
A good headshot will maximize your chances, even if you're not a model.
You may love your @aol.com email account, but for business, no.
Also, make sure your email username is some version of your name or skill, not 420Luver@gethigh.com or something like that.
Do you like to get high?
Wasted?
Smack big-booty ho's?
Join Fight Club?
Awesome. This IS America, after all.
But make sure NONE of that is found when your name gets searched, cause they ARE going to search you.
You would be shocked how many jobs are lost that way before you even get the interview, or between the first and second interview.
I see kids applying for conservative Christian colleges and their social media is a hot mess of partying and inappropriateness.
Don't do that.
It's called your PERSONAL life for a reason.
Keep it personal.
-Good headshot
-ROBUST profile, meaning, you've filled in all of the appropriate sections and keywords.
-Make sure it's up-to-date with your work experience, again, using action words and specific accomplishments like I described above.
(boring and obvious, but I can't skip this step....the unique stuff is coming)
Here is a list of places to make sure you show up.
You want have a presence on ALL of them to increase your odds of getting hired:
@CareerBuilder
@indeed
@ZipRecruiter They advertise heavily, which is a plus
@SimplyHired
-Google for Jobs (search engine, easy to use)
-Dice, primarily for tech jobs
@MonsterJobs (sorry guys, you should have been higher up the list)
@Glassdoor
@roberthalf
-job.com
@LaddersHQ if your an exec or looking to make $100k or more.
Use ALL of them.
We want you to be EASY to find and everywhere
Or, an exec leaves, opening up a position.
YOU will be one of the first to know!
Yes, it can be obvious, but it shows you're paying attention.
-You've got your mind right
-You know what you're looking for
-You've put together a killer resume
-You've posted it everywhere.
-You've got a great headshot
-You've cleaned up your social media, if it needed it.
-And, you've set up alerts to be 'in the know.'
Everything else was just leading up to this.
