/ I was pleased to join a group convened by @Borthwick a few weeks ago to brainstorm specific ideas on what platforms can do now to safeguard the 2020 elections.
render.betaworks.com/ten-things-tec…
@Borthwick 2/ The idea was to "discuss immediate steps the major social media companies can take to help safeguard our democratic process and mitigate the weaponization of their platforms" and to publish a list of recommendations.
/ The first idea is to remove and archive fraudulent and automated accounts:
/ Second, clearly identify paid political posts — even when they’re shared.
/ Third, use consistent definitions of an ad or paid post.
/ Fourth, verify and accurately disclose advertising entities in political ads.
/ Fifth, require certification for political ads to receive organic reach.
/ Sixth, remove pricing incentives for presidential candidates that reward virality.
/ Seventh, provide detailed resources with accurate voting information at top of feeds.
/ Eighth, provide a more transparent and consistent set of data in political ad archives.
/ Ninth, clarifying where platforms draw the line on “lying”. (update to this one since publication- Facebook has banned deep fakes: washingtonpost.com/technology/202…)
/ Tenth, be transparent about the resources they are putting into safety and security.
/ The meeting we had in December grew out of a discussion @borthwick and @chrishughes had about what technology companies could do to safeguard the election. It will continue- please add your ideas here. Thanks to all who participated- I was pleased to be in the room.
