Hi Joe. Pretrial detention in NYC decreased 72% in last 3 decades. Violent crime dropped 82% in same period. Brooklyn has been practicing what bail reform now requires for years. Lowest violent crime rate in history. False stats + 3 weeks in & a correlation? Stop lying.
And Joe: Forget just historical trends. Violent crime is down in New York *this year* by the NYPD's own numbers. What do you call peddling another person's lies? Right: Propaganda. I know you can't help yourself, Joe, sit down or work to help make the law work. Fearmongerer.

Sickening: Bill Barr today. Politicizing antisemitism. Announced he’ll jail a woman w/ mental health issues now in treatment. Despite release in Brooklyn, charge her w/ a federal hate crime. All to inflict pain. Today, the victim called to stop exploiting what happened. He won’t.
Recall that William Barr made the call not to hold Eric Garner's killer accountable federally. Not to intervene. Claimed Eric Garner was not in a chokehold when he repeatedly gasped, "I can’t breathe." But a poor Black woman w/ mental illness, he’s all in: gothamist.com/news/bill-barr…
“The feds could take her as soon as her release from hospital & jail her. She will potentially be stable at that point. The worst thing you could do to somebody who's just been stabilized is to incarcerate them. Creates the exact problem these bail laws were designed to remedy.”

Elyse Maister, the Jewish woman allegedly struck by Tiffany Harris, is brave. Didn’t need to speak up & who knows what her community might think. She did what felt right bc using her is so wrong. “I feel like politicians are exploiting these incidents to roll back bail reform.”
While NY tabloids, police & prosecutors have been busy attacking Tiffany Harris, Maister, the young Jewish woman allegedly attacked by Harris, knew from the beginning she was in need of help: “In the moment she seemed like in some emotionally distressed state, just unwell.”

In India, bank deposits are protected by the Deposit Insurance & Credit Guarantee Corp. (DICGC).

This means that your bank deposits/FDs up to an amount of 1 lakh are protected & insured (1/10)
When the Modi govt. introduced the FRDI Bill, it sought to do away with this deposit guarantee.

With massive uproar from the Congress & the Opposition, the Bill was temporarily withdrawn in 2018. (2/10)

The #Spitzenkandidat process is in its death throes, after the other big groups in the European Parliament declined to endorse the EPP's Manfred Weber, & leaders at last week's #EUCO European Council (apart from Merkel) discarded it.

This is a Good Thing. 1/20
The Spitzenkandidaten idea was: voters elect President of European Commission by proxy, with European Parliament a sort of electoral college counting the votes for pan-EU political parties; this would democratise the system and bring voters closer to EU's leadership. 2/20

How have the poor fared under Modi ji?

“Since May 2014, when this government took over, real wages of agricultural labourers have grown at the rate of 0.77% per annum until October 2018, whereas it has grown only at 0.02% per annum for non-agricultural labourers”
In an economy where GDP is claimed 2 be growing at 7% plus pa. wages of agricultural workers increased by less than 1% pa over 4 years.

For non-agricultural labour, wages in the same period increased by 0.02% pa. Essentially 0.

“For construction workers, who form among the largest group of workers outside agriculture, real wages during the same period has declined by 0.24% per annum.”

Wages over 4 years under Modi ji actually DECLINED 4 construction workers. Why?

THREAD: I have some thoughts on SB10, which was just signed today by Governor Brown.
If this is all that gets accomplished, it's not enough. There is much, much more to do when it comes to reforming pretrial release/detention practices in California (and they should be, overwhelmingly, release practices)
So if SB10 is the finish line, I'm disappointed. If it's the starting line, OK. In the interest of full disclosure, I pitched @robbonta on the importance of bail reform a couple of years ago and have worked with the coalition that supported (then didn't support) SB 10.

1/ The overwhelming majority of criminal cases in America involve accusations of non-violent acts (including allegations of property, drug, testimonial, and so-called "status" offenses). One of the *least serious* criminal allegations in the justice system is "criminal trespass."
2/ In America, someone is not a "criminal" simply because the government has accused them of a criminal offense. Convictions require a trial or plea. This is true whether or not the offense is non-violent. A person is *only* a "criminal" if they have been convicted of an offense.
