Lala Lajpat Rai, also called Punjab Kesari, was born this day (28 Jan) in 1865. He played a key role in India's freedom struggle. He was deported to Mandalay in Burma in May 1907 without trial for his freedom struggle activities in Punjab. Later he was allowed to return. #Thread1

He was again imprisoned frm 1921 to 1923 for his lead participation in non-cooperation movement.

Lala lajpat Rai gave a 32-page petition to Senate of American Parliament, describing British brutality n seeking support of international community for the freedom of India. #Thread2

Petition discussed in Oct 1917 in US Senate. He founded num organizations/groups. He attained martyrdom following his participation in protests against Simon Commission.

Simon Commission was set up by British govt in Nov 1927 2 report on India's constitutional progress. #Thread3

It comprised of a group of 7 British Members of Parliament under chairmanship of John Simon. This commission arrived in India in 1928. As it had no Indian members, freedom fighters revolted against it. Lala Lajpat Rai n his followers protested against Simon Commission. #Thread4

He led protest march on 30 Oct 1928 in Lahore. Scott, then Lahore SP, ordered lathi charge. Rai n 1000s of freedom fighters were injured. He died of injuries 17 days later.

To avenge Rai’s death, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Rajguru, Sukhdev planned to kill Scott. #Thread5
