We’re aware @ucl is trialling a privately provided attendance monitoring system (SEATs) that boasts capacity for:

a) phone tracking
b) facial recog ‘all-seeing-eye’ in classrooms
c) one place storage of attendance & mental health info abt students

@ucl --the system has all these capacities but not known which ucl will use (they haven't ruled anything out)
--ucl private contractors tried fingerprint tracking on outsourced staff recently
--storage of mental health info was presented to the SU as part of a wellbeing package....
--it is a wholesale response to ucl facing criticism for picking out students on visas for "special" treatment (public identification for attendance etc.,)
--now *everyone* will be able to be surveyed at the same time
--the phone tracking will be by an app on student's phones
--there will be choices (we just don't know what they will be)
--all under private provider

Important: on amending the current "offer" from UUK. A number of people have asked whether it is possible to argue for an amendment/counter offer at this stage. Here we explain, given confirmed information about the status of this offer, why this is possible & necessary...
First: the "offer" does *not* have the status of an agreed or negotiated offer between UUK and our negotiating team. Has now been confirmed by an elected negotiator, that a) the text has *not* undergone any discussion/negotiation by the negotiators, b) it arrived Fri. 2.30pm...
as part of a conference call and was released to members just after 4pm - a space of 2 hours-ish, with no modification or assessment by the negotiators, c) UCU negotiators *were told that they could not make any changes to the text* as it was a UUK document, d) the negotiators...

To clarify: there is a win but it is only on pushing the timetable. There is no clear win in *substance* of offer. As many have pointed out, a) DB until April 2019 was guaranteed anyway, b) the Independent Panel is worded as within a) "regulatory framework" and ...ctd.
...b) "affordability". There is no commitment to look at framework ( = assumptions that caused the deficit) or approach the Pensions Regulator/Gov't on that, so deficit is built in (maybe slightly smaller, but still there). So no actual commitment in offer that secures...
DB benefit structure. Additionally: the part that mentions looking at solution "broadly" in line with DB benefits, not a guarantee of any kind - remember UUK thought new DC scheme was broadly in line with existing DB - "broadly" is v broad for them...In sum...

1. How to make the Senate remove @POTUS Trump.

1/3 of all senators are elected every 6 years. The 2020 cycle has 18 running and 3 retiring seats. 21 plus 47 is 68 and Trump would be gone. How can we get them all to vote to convict? Unlikely we can. But 53 GOP are on the spot.
2. We should create a database that details every member of the @SenateGOP and what crimes they can be charged with with the proof. Make the ones running in 2020 know that they will face those crimes during the campaign. But for the other 35 @SenateGOP put them on the list.
3. Make them aware of the facts that could expose them to criminal charges. Use social media posts to flood their campaigns' time lines. Now that all rules of comity have been burned and we are in the post-Trump USA, we can pursue them for criminal charges.

When I think of language HTTP design I remember something one of my professors wrote way back in *1997*:

If a main task of programmers is accessing the Internet then the language design should support generating HTTP requests about as naturally as it does addition.

2/ Let me be absolutely unequivocal: a WTO Brexit itself does NOTHING for the UK's ability to export anything to anyone (except temporarily tank the pound).

Nothing.

Not. One. Thing.
3/ A WTO Brexit pulls the UK out of the most advanced trade agreement in history and dozens of other trade agreements.

The UK was trading with the EU and others on one set of rules, it will now be trading on another, far shittier set. That is fact. Not in dispute.

Telling me a system is broken is *worthless* if I can't ask it why it's broken.
"Yo, your shit's broken" has ALWAYS been BAD monitoring.
At times, it may be the only monitoring we have, but it's not the end goal.

Every time I see #Monitoring vs #Observability I wonder if they knew sysadmins could program before #DevOps became a thing. I've been a sysadmin for almost 20 yrs. On day 1, I thought "running the same commands over and over again is dumb, here's some #Perl."

Competence is knowing what to do in a situation and how to do it. It is not the same as excellence.
Excellence is dependent on other people, like judges, examiners, teachers, assessors, inspectors, auditors. But we can't control these people and whether they think we're excellent or not.
