So here's the history of it. In 2007 Steve Bannon joined a Chinese internet company called IGE founded by Mighty Ducks 2 actor Brock Pierce. It did loot farming in games like Everquest and WOW and then sold those items for real money.
As an aside, Brock Pierce was also heavily involved in Digital Entertainment Network (DEN), the internet startup Bryan Singer was involved with that saw multiple people convicted for rape of underage boys.
WOW gamers got really mad at IGE's loot farming business and filed a class action lawsuit against the company. Eventually the games changed their systems to cut off loot farming for profit and IGE was done.
But it was during that time that Bannon took notice of what he called "the monster power of rootless white males" and vowed to harness angry gamers towards the far right populist movement he knew was coming.

So when Gamergate first became a thing, Bannon recognized it as exactly the thing he was waiting for, and now as head of Breitbart, dispatched Milo imbed and gain the trust of the burgeoning culture war movement to help steer towards Bannon's ultimate ends.
And this really was the early formation of what we've come to know as the alt-right. Might it have gotten there on it's own without Bannon's involvement? Possibly, but I doubt it.
And would Trump have ultimately succeeded in being elected if the alt-right didn't exist?

Possibly, but I doubt it.
Here's a big thing I wrote about how Gamergate paved the way for Trump, which still holds up except the ending where I predicted Trump wouldn't win.
