Internal note on Sept. 3, 2019 says NOAA forecasters found out about the President’s bad tweet after only after they contradicted it in substance, because that’s when @spann responded to it—a tribute to his influence.

The Galanis case was the source of the bank records showing payments from Burisma to an LLC that paid Hunter Biden, the documents that have largely fueled Trump and Giuliani’s quest in Ukraine.
The Galanis case is largely unrelated to Biden, but the LLC (owned by Biden’s co-board member Devon Archer) was used to transfer money used in a bond fraud scheme and so some of its bank statements were introduced by SDNY in an 2018 trial, kicking off this whole shebang.
A cautionary tale to corporate lawyers if nothing else—commingling unrelated funds in a multipurpose LLC reliably leads to all sorts of cataclysms.

This goes to something that’s been at the back of my mind. It was arguably a total blunder for McConnell to set up this first upcoming vote as a vote on the *idea* of witnesses and evidence rather than a vote to simply dismiss the articles.
Most arguments the WH has been making are essentially arguments to dismiss—that the articles as written could never justify impeachment. They’re not great ones, imo, but they’re normal. McConnell’s rules put them in this place of being against the Kantian ideal of evidence too.

1/5—Full report coming! In meantime, remarks Re: my #Hurricane #DORIAN data:

Buildup to peak winds was gradual—even once I was in eyewall—likely because of cyclone’s slow forward motion.

Eye had bright, misty quality—I didn’t get stadium effect. Lull lasted long: ~1:05-2:30pm.
2/5—I collected data w/ 2 devices. They matched well: 913.4mb (1:50pm) & 913.7mb (1:53pm) in eye. I sadly ended data collection in eye, as I needed to relocate to safety. I believe I caught min pressure, as it was starting to edge upwards when I relocated—but can’t be sure. Grrr.
3/5—It’s clear my location was stricken by high-energy mesovortices. Couldn't see them in 100% whiteout, but that’s only explanation for crazy pressure fluctuations & also damage—i.e., car thrown from parking lot up onto lawn next to our bunker, *against* primary wind flow.

Timeline:

Last Wednesday: Trump receives briefing about #Dorian. Storm track over FL peninsula, into Gulf & possibly Alabama.
7-day forecast was highly uncertain (obviously since it changed)

Weekend: Trump Tweets that Alabama will be hit hard (wrong)
The Tweet should have been corrected, adjusted or deleted to assure folks in Alabama that Dorian was out of range.

Nope.

Trump is still going -- and a major hurricane is about to make landfall in the Carolinas.

This is nauseating b/c it obfuscates the great work being done.
Only one of the top stories on Washington Post is actual news related to Dorian, so people are reading the media back-and-forth that Trump is feeding.

Now Trump could be guilty of "doctoring a weather map"

Yep, I’m alive. Made it to Nassau. #Hurricane #DORIAN: By far the most intense cyclone I’ve witnessed in 28 years of chasing. Thought I was playing it safe by riding it out in a solid-concrete school on a hill in Marsh Harbour. Thought wrong.
Winds pounded the building with the force of a thousand sledgehammers. Crept out during eye to find school mostly destroyed, cars in parking lot thrown around & mutilated. Barometer said 913.4 mb.
Frantically piled into few functioning cars (one of them mine) & relocated to government complex before backside struck. Building filled with terrorized refugees, many who had swam to safety or abandoned collapsed houses. The calm eye saved lives—gave victims chance to relocate.

Now that everyone is back at work, the conversation about Hurricane #Dorian and climate change will begin in earnest. That's fine as long as you stick to sound science.

So, what is the current "consensus" among hurricane scientists?

(1) It's important to point out that this 2019.

It is not the year 2100 and you should not take climate model output from 80-years in the future as the proof of a "signal" you are seeing today.

The changes in the 22nd Century are a long ways off.
(2) We have a long historical record -- going back to 1851 -- with, of course, decreasing certainty in hurricane data.

However, since the 1940s we have aircraft recon and then satellites came along in the past 50-years.

We also have good records of U.S. landfalls.
