30 chapters plus annexes on 1,598 pages, covering everything from tariffs, food safety, product standards, and services (not very ambitious), to patents, etc, investment, labour, environment, dispute settlement & more

Q. Why did CETA take 7 years?

The depth and breadth, requiring lots of work — above all, lots of concessions by both sides.

Let's hope this is for public consumption, not what will happen inside the talks.

Otherwise Jan 1, 2021 won't look pretty.

NEW: another WTO appeals report from an Appellate Body on its sickbed.

Today, the appeal upheld a Canadian complaint (DS505) against the US tariffs imposed to “countervail” alleged Canadian subsidies on “supercalendered paper”.

I had to look it up too. Supercalendered paper is a cheap shiny paper used for magazines, without an actual glossy coating.

The panel and appeals reports now go to the WTO membership for adoption in the Dispute Settlement Body in 30 days

The main issue is about calculating the alleged subsidy.

US measure was revoked when the first-stage panel report was circulated.

But the US appealed anyway to clarify legal issues particularly on the use of “facts available”.

New consultations aim to

● simplify and tailor tariffs
● remove tariffs on key inputs to production
● remove tariffs where the UK has no or limited production

1. These are “applied” tariffs. If they are below the “bound” levels the UK has committed in the WTO (now via EU28, after the transition via the UK’s own commitments), they are fully legal, no need for negotiations in the WTO.

NEW. The WTO Appellate Body (still gasping its last breaths) has released its appeal report in a case brought by Ukraine against Russia on conformity assessments for railway equipment (DS499)

It's complicated. Some points upheld, others rejected

Bottom line: Russia is violating the Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement (TBT), but in ways and for reasons that are not entirely the same as in the original panel report

It now has to correct what it is doing wrong in a "reasonable period of time"

The case is based on Article 5 of the Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement, which includes non-discrimination in conformity assessments and a host of other requirements.

There are multiple investigations into global crime syndicates & govt corruption being made public daily.

The example @DawsonSField shared today involving pay-for-play w/ Foreign actors tied to Obama/Clinton St. Dept is huge.

Benghazi isn't going away.
The company hired by the Clinton State Dept was the [Blue Mountain Group].

They also brought in Muhannad Alamir who ran an outfit called [Eclipse].

The State Dept never vetted Alamir who turned out to be an associate of the Ghadafi family.

Alamir's company was to recruit locals to serve as as early warning "perimeter" for the Blue Mountain security contractors.

Guess who turned a blind eye to the attackers?

Cameron was exactly the wrong person to lead the Remain campaign: Many of the arguments that needed to be made involved criticism of his own party.
Was Cameron EVER going to say: "I hear your concerns about immigration. The reason EU immigration hasn't been controlled is because I chose not to enforce the EU's rules against benefit tourism. Unlike other EU countries"? Ever!?
Was Cameron EVER going to say: "The EU protects you from immoral governments. Threresa May wants to scrap the Human Rights Act once we leave. & I've been selling the Saudis British weapons, knowing they're being used in crimes against humanity and the EU has rules against that"?
