So, turns out that suburban Baltimore County, Maryland's 3rd largest county with 832,000 residents, hasn't actually been recycling the glass that people put out for recycling for the past *seven* years. baltimoresun.com/maryland/balti…
And just to underscore, since many commenters are bringing predictable retorts of "well, what you expect of that broken city," this is NOT Baltimore City we're talking about. This is the large suburban county that surrounds it, a totally separate jurisdiction.

Someone, I can't recall who, asked recently in this space for single words that defined this past decade. I've thought about it for a bit and now offer my candidate: IMPUNITY.
The decade started with the failure to hold to account the finance connivers who brought about the Great Recession, a failure that fueled both the Republican sweep of the 2010 midterms and Trump's election. See @noamscheiber's “Escape Artists” & @eisingerj's “Chickenshit Club.”

Whoa: new report finds that Indiana officials "quietly absolved Amazon of responsibility" for a warehouse worker's death in order to aid state's bid for HQ2. "They deleted every fine levied and accepted the company’s argument—that the worker was to blame." indystar.com/story/news/inv…
"During the call, [Indiana's OSHA director] told Amazon officials what she’d need from them in order to shift the blame from the company to 'employee misconduct'...She told [the inspector on the case] 'I hope you don’t take it personally if we have to manipulate your citations.'”
"Some days after the call with Amazon, [the inspector] said Indiana's Labor Commissioner pulled him into his office. The governor told him how much it would mean to Indiana if the state won the Amazon HQ. Then the commissioner told him to back off on the Amazon case—or resign."

300 murders this year. Same as last year. This high since the 2015 riots that rocked the nation.
Only 2250 officers currently serving the city. Down from 3350. And corruption found up and thru thr ranks. BPD Officers that I knew a few years ago were eager to retire. They were fed up with Baltimore crime. I don’t blame them. They’re only human. Everyone has a breaking point.
We won’t even talk about the GTTF and what a travesty that is on the BDP.

Neither. Even in Rationalia, there could never be such a button to push. The idea that political life could be structured in such a way is the fantasy of a freshman comp sci student, and the question serves no end other than shaming us for having felt moral lives.
The unrivaled king of this is Peter Singer, who's made a career telling people they're emotional Neanderthals for feeling sad at pictures of starving kids, and as a result has been dubbed a heroic expander of the circle of moral concern.

This heart-wrenching piece by @AlecMacGillis about violent crime in #Baltimore is worth reading twice. There are so many points here that warrant their own story to fully understand how this city came to this moment.
I'd love a series that would allow Alec & other reporters to pull some of these strands and go deep, as Alec did on segregation & the cancellation of the Red Line, which he touches on here. That long form piece is an essential companion. placesjournal.org/article/the-th…
But there's more to explore about political leadership in the city and how it has failed public safety and law enforcement, about political dynasties that hung on too long w/o building young new leaders, abt a business community that allowed segregation to expand.
