Good morning, #IowaCaucus goers and Indivisibles across the country who woke up this morning still confused about what happened last night. We don’t have all the answers but we want to share what we do know so far.
What happened: we don’t have official numbers, which is a huge letdown for the grassroots orgs that invested so much in IA. Some campaigns are claiming victory and others are starting to cast doubt on the results altogether. Both are irresponsible based on current set of facts.
What we know: it’s clear that @PeteButtigieg, @BernieSanders, and @EWarren performed well—we can't know how well or what that looks like until we get numbers, but it seems like these historic candidates are on top.
What this means: the top 3 campaigns come away from Iowa without a firm delegate count or sense of momentum, which makes it even more important for you to get involved with the process as we head towards New Hampshire. indivisible.org/resource/how-i…
We DO know that last night was a huge blow to Biden’s credibility as the best candidate to take on Trump. He was the undisputed frontrunner for months, and remained one of the top two forecasted candidates through yesterday—but polls and expectations don’t vote.
After months of ignoring grassroots activists & telling advocates to “go vote for someone else,” voters did just that. The results we are aware of show that Biden didn’t attract new votes, and even failed to hold onto his own support.
If he’s placing 4th or 5th in a state he’s run in twice before, we have to question Biden’s capacity to run a successful campaign and his ability to ignite the kind of broad coalition of new and diverse voters that a candidate is going to need to take on Trump and win.
This is what we know from the information available at this time. As always follow us for more updates, we’ll keep y’all updated.
