3 lesbian teacher friends of mine have been fired for getting married. So when Cuomo asks Buttigieg about his marriage and asks him to speak to #LGBTQ folks in America about this, I think about what it would have meant to me as a kid to have #BarbaraJordan come out.

Also, a woman CHANGED HER VOTE in #IowaCaucus when she discovered that Buttigieg was gay because, as the precinct captain told the press, "I don't want THAT in the White House."

People who don't see what risks #LGBTQ people have to take to live our lives need to listen more and talk over and through us less. We don't have the rights you have. The President of the United States is trying to legislate #LGBTQ folks out of existence.

In January 2017 I endorsed @KamalaHarris and @SenGillibrand as the best ticket for 2020. I cited Harris's pragmatic left-leaning centrism and her charisma, with Gillibrand's accessible progressivism. I cited their relative youth and dynamic resumes.

Gillibrand was felled early by the grossest of misogyny. Harris seemed in it to win it. A huge opening rally in Oakland of 20k, lots of TV advantage due to the Kavanaugh & Barr hearings where she was mesmerizingly good. But the MSM was in love with Beto and he kept failing up.

So story after story came out about Beto, while Harris got no press until she began to falter in the polls, felled by stumbling on healthcare while being strafed repeatedly by Biden and his campaign who recognized her as a threat, calling her "slippery and slick."

The candidate with the most billionaire donors is Biden--that is embedded in the article focused on Buttigieg.
It seem like journalistic malpractice to write a piece that the details of the story refutes.

Then the headline is false.
Also Biden has said straight out that the wealthy are safe with him.

The uniquely terrible leadership of the @DNC allowed @BernieSanders to manipulate the base--women and POC who are those most excluded by the undemocratic caucus process--into keeping caucuses instead of trashing them for the #VoterSuppression they are. This is the result.
END THESE CAUCUSES NOW. Never again allow any candidate to bully the rest of us into submission for personal gain. No true progressive thinks caucuses are fair or reasonable or even makes sense.

Not to attack Iowans personally, but for my ENTIRE VOTING LIFE my choices in the three majority black cities I have lived in have been decided by a state that is 91% white folks who have no sense of what it means to live in a multicultural society. It has to end.

Fresno City Council meeting April 4, 2019! Councilman Steve Brandau’s last Meeting before moving to Board of Supervisors. Council will have Special Election August 13 to fill his position. The Mayor’s gas tax ($172 million) allocation scheduled for today has already been called
“dead on arrival” and thus pulled. Other items to be considered : will allow employees to use Kaiser for health , BMG to provide emergency workplace loans for employees, Workshop on Recruiting a new Chief of Police, Councilman Paul Caprioglio to become Council President with
Brandau’s @stevebrandau resignation. Grizzly Fest is on the consent calendar. Doesn’t seem to be the raucous contention over that 2-day event happening at Woodward Park like last year’s Council meeting regarding it.

Like a lot of journos (humans?) I've said things years ago that I now deeply regret. Chief among them for me is, more than a decade ago, in my 20s, when I wasn't a public figure, I gave a bunch of speeches to students on Islam/extremism. And I said dumb offensive ranty stuff.

Speaking without notes, & trying to be bombastic, I made stupid sweeping remarks about non-Muslims, especially atheists. I cringe now when I rehear/reread those remarks. I made stupid offensive analogies to animals. Argh. I'm embarrassed to have to write about all this again.

Alrighty folks, it's time for another thread. On magic, and, to a lesser extent, magicians and wizards, in fantasy.

This is what I think about while hitting the gym.

So, let's dive in.

There's something about older fantasy of all subgenres (epic fantasy, sword and sorcery, etc.) that seems to be missing in modern literature.

Magic.

And I don't mean throwing about fireballs or conjuring up specters from the vasty deep. I speak of something more subtle.

It's a rather indescribable quality, but it permeates the entirety of the works, even if a wizard or enchantress never shows up in the pages. It's a richness, a whiff of the unearthly that permeates everything. Magic is the best word to describe it.

I’ve had a lot of emotions cycling through my mind since yesterday’s announcement, and have been trying to find the right words to share, beyond the staggering numbers. What this means to me as a teacher; what your kids mean to me; and what all this could mean for the both of us.
Being a high school teacher is a funny job. You are so much a part of their lives for four years; seeing them every day, and watching them grow over such a significant and influential part of their lives.
You’re a part of big moments both in the classroom, where their achievement reveals something special about them, & outside the classroom, where you really learn how multi-faceted they are as human beings, as they win soccer championships or compete in mock trial tournaments.

Gay people want to get married and then exist on the same planet as Christians.

So there's your difference.
What this argument is basically saying is that a Christian's "right" to not contaminate themselves with public acknowledgement of a gay person's existence is equivalent to the right of Jews and gays and PoC and Roma etc. to not be mass-murdered by the state.

It's not.
Christian conservatives insist on a world where a Muslim wishing "Happy Holidays" aggressively hears "Merry Christmas" in return, and Muslim kids hear prayers to White Jesus over the intercom in public schools, but a baker can pre-vet his cakes through an Adam and Steve filter.
