Government secrecy wins again.
A federal judge in Virginia just sealed the courtroom for a hearing for Damaso Lopez, Chapo Guzman's longtime top aide.
Prosecutors are expected to ask the judge to reduce Damaso's life sentence for testifying against Guzman at his trial last year.
ALL of Damaso's sentencing papers are under seal. Federal prosecutors in both Virginia & DC agreed in *October* to unseal them but they have failed to uphold that agreement.
The US govt apparently doesn't want anyone knowing about the deals they cut in w/cartel informants.
There was little reason to seal Damaso's hearing. He already appeared IN PUBLIC as a witness. He was already sentenced to life in prison.
Federal prosecutors seem not to want to reveal what benefits they are giving to him for helping them make their landmark case against Chapo.
I have held off posting this email to my lawyer out of courtesy--until now. It shows clearly that DC and Virginia prosecutors agreed more than three months ago to unseal many parts of Damaso's file.
It hasn't happened yet. Why not?

New York corrections officials suspend visits at all of New York's 52 state prisons starting tonight at 5 pm until April 11.
New York state inmates will now have to rely on mail, email and phone to stay in touch w/loved ones.
State corrections department saying that legal visits can continue but must be "non-contact."

Here's a Brooklyn federal judge deciding yesterday to let a drug defendant out on bail b/c it was a bigger risk to the community to put him in jail given threats from coronavirus.
"The more people we crowd into that facility, the more we're increasing the risk to the community."
Legal Aid Society writes City Hall & Corrections Dept. complaining they are hearing from clients on Rikers Island that they don't have access to soap or basic cleaning supplies.
Situation holds even at the North Infirmary Command where inmates w/acute medical conditions are kept.
NOW: New York court officials are suspending all new civil and criminal trials across the state starting Monday.
Jury selection in both civil and criminal systems suspended until further notice.
Some trials already underway will continue.

Few days ago I asked dozens of lawyers w/incarcerated clients to ask about conditions in NY jail/prisons. Starting to get some responses.
From Greene Correctional:
“They put up posters about washing hands & keeping things clean & wiping things down.” Germicidal wipes passed out.
More from the same Greene inmate:
“As far as people coming in and giving us advice, there hasn’t been any of that.”
“We know we can’t depend on them to make sure we’re all right. We watch the news and get information. We keep ourselves clean anyway.”
From an inmate at Walkill:
Staff sent out memo about hand washing, cover mouth, but no wipes/sanitizer. Visitors being forced to fill out questionnaire about travel, etc, but so far no one denied.

Prosecutors file new charging document against ex-@realDonaldTrump campaign chairman @PaulManafort, signaling a possible plea deal, reports @AP.
A guilty plea to charges in his second trial (which was to be held in Washington, DC) is to be entered today by @PaulManafort, according to media reports.
According to the filing, @PaulManafort will enter a guilty plea to a single count of conspiracy to obstruct justice.
