Here's a Brooklyn federal judge deciding yesterday to let a drug defendant out on bail b/c it was a bigger risk to the community to put him in jail given threats from coronavirus.
"The more people we crowd into that facility, the more we're increasing the risk to the community."
Legal Aid Society writes City Hall & Corrections Dept. complaining they are hearing from clients on Rikers Island that they don't have access to soap or basic cleaning supplies.
Situation holds even at the North Infirmary Command where inmates w/acute medical conditions are kept.
NOW: New York court officials are suspending all new civil and criminal trials across the state starting Monday.
Jury selection in both civil and criminal systems suspended until further notice.
Some trials already underway will continue.
Also: No new state grand juries will be empaneled statewide starting Monday except in "exceptional circumstances."
That's a move that will significantly reduce the number of criminal cases moving through the court system.
Just seeing this now.
Today's order by the state's chief administrative judge also places a week-long moratorium on housing court evictions.
