Leo Varadkar has held a video call EUCO President Charles Michel ahead of next week’s European Council meeting on the seven year EU budget, acc to govt spokesman
The Taoiseach “set out Ireland’s well-established position and emphasised the need to protect the budget for CAP in the interest of rural Ireland and family farms, in particular, as pillar one payments comprise almost 75% of on-farm income.”
“He also pressed for an increased allocation for the Peace Plus programme for Northern Ireland and the border counties. 
 
The Taoiseach also updated the President on political developments in Ireland in light of the General Election.”

The NI Affairs Committee will inquire into the impact of the Irish Protocol and whether it will allow goods produced in Northern Ireland unfettered access to the rest of the UK internal market. The committee will investigate the following:
What customs checks, processes, declarations and infrastructure improvements will need to be implemented by (a) businesses and (b) customs authorities in (i) Northern Ireland and (ii) Britain in order to export goods from (A) Northern Ireland to Britain and (B) Britain to NI?
Whether the UK has sufficient (a) customs agents (b) customs officials & (c) veterinarians to facilitate the new customs arrangements?
What effect the new customs arrangements will have on the (a) volume and (b) profitability of (i) West-East and (ii) East-West trade btn NI & GB?

While we're at it... here is the UK govt explainer from October 2019 on the Irish Protocol and how it interacts with the Political Declaration and (yes), the level playing field:
1/ The changes to the Political Declaration set out the clear intention to conclude a future trading relationship with the EU that is centred on a comprehensive free trade agreement, with zero tariffs, accompanied by a broad and ambitious security partnership, and cooperation...
2/...in areas such as research. It also sets out that the future relationship must encompass robust level playing field measures to uphold current high standards in areas including social and employment standards, environment and climate change.

Interesting Art 50 question: if the UK asks for a short extension, can the European Council grant a longer one, and override the UK's request? Text Art 50 does not say that there needs to be agreement about the length. 1/
The extension could in fact be articulated in terms which allow both a short extension - in the event the WA gets approved and ratified - and a longer one. 2/
This could be done by stating that the extension lasts until the entry into force of the WA, and failing that, until a given date (long extension). That would avoid having to go back for a longer extension. 3/
