Let's review the things that happened since BART's ridership started dropping in 2014 that have nothing to do with homeless people riding the train: 1/
1. BART's raised minimum fares a cumulative 19%. (Chart from @danbrekke article here:)kqed.org/news/11793325/…
2. Gas prices plunged by almost 1/3 as fracked oil started hitting the market.
So: driving got cheaper while BARTing got priceier.

3. Use of ride-hailing apps soared.
According to survey data, these VC-subsidized services definitely cannibalize transit ridership. Ref: pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019…
4. Soaring housing costs in the core have pushed low-income people to places that don't have easy access to BART. (High-income people make less use of transit when they live next to it.) Ref: transformca.org/transform-repo… /end

1/ The government spends ~2x as much through the Mortgage Interest Deduction as it does subsidizing low-income renters through Section 8.*
*(These figures predate the Trump tax bill, which slightly lowered the MID cap)

1b/ Guess who the MID benefits? High-income households!
That's because:
-The bigger a mortgage, the bigger the deduction (up to a cap of $750k)
-The higher your tax bracket, the more valuable the deduction
-Cheaper homes=lower mortgages=no benefit from itemizing, anyway

If you're watching news of California's #KincadeFire from a safe place, here's what you should know, A THREAD:
1. It's looking like the fire was started by a malfunctioning jumper on a Pacific Gas and Electric transmission line.
2. (In anticipation of bad fire conditions, PG&E had shut off power to its lower-voltage distribution lines in this area, but not the transmission lines. The blackout made dealing with the fire harder.)

Well - it's my birthday today. It's also 3 weeks since we provided @RedbridgeLive with a clear list of emergency needs as disanled, homeless people, that they need to help us meet as per the Care Act. NONE have been met.
@RedbridgeLive So - NO access to disabled bathing facilities suitable to our impairments, for months now. No hairwashing/drying. No support in accessing food, made increasingly impossible by disability, but also complete lack of cooking and refrigeration facilities.
@RedbridgeLive The distance to the car is too much for me, and for Stevie. She last "went out" on 16 January when she was forced, with Sean, to transfer to another Travelodge while I was in hospital. She hasnt seen anyone except me and her brother since.

I have done several series on #homeless people and women and teens are at high risk for sexual assault due to their vulnerability and being "invisible" in society. There are few access points to report. scribd.com/document/38694…
There are some disturbing remarks in the threads on @seattletimes article. These imply that because the study was small, it's irrelevant. But that is quite obviously false. Every raped woman is relevant. And the coercion of Native women by non-Native men has historical context.
Native women are the least addressed in the context of the #MeToo movement. Homeless women are not mentioned at all. This @seattletimes article highlights that fact. For that reason and more it should be read and shared and discussed--but in no way dismissed.
