BREAK: Sajid Javid has resigned.

A budget is due in less than a month.

He becomes the shortest serving Chancellor since Iain Macleod (who died in office).

This reshuffle just got a lot more interesting.
Net result of Javid resignation is that Boris Johnson’s power over his government, which before today was total, will be diminished.

A PM can afford to lose one Chancellor. They can’t afford to lose another in quick succession. Whoever replaces Javid will be powerful.
Because of this, my instinct is that Downing St will appoint a complete loyalist.
It’s not going to happen now but the last time a Tory PM and Chancellor rowed (and the Chancellor resigned) about advisers the PM was gone within the year.
