Pushing the Kona.. off to Coimbatore. One way 380 km!
After 100km.
Just over halfway to my destination.
300 is up
Reached Coimbatore. Final stats
Flawless performance from start to finish. 410-420 quite possible with this result, if driven in cooler temperatures/in the night. Cost of fuel for 385km = Rs. 240 (in Bangalore). As against Rs. 2900-3000 that my Ford Endeavour 3.2L would've guzzled. EVs for life! #hyundaikona
Allowed the battery pack to cool off for a few hours (not necessary, just a good habit) and now put the Kona on charge on a regular 16A socket. Will juice up in about 11.5 hours. My return back to Bangalore is tomorrow evening, so have lots of cushion and can juice up slowly.
Charging status at 9.15 AM. Plugged in at 7.30 pm, and was supposed to be done by 7 am. Took 2 hours more thanks to lower voltage (stayed at around 205-210 volts) and a 30 min power cut in between.
Started the return drive. Should be closer than the onward considering the altitude gain. But then again the cooler temperatures that comes with driving in the night should have better efficiency. Let's see!
First stop.. took a shorter route out of the city to play it safe. Stopped at CCD to juice up a bit. Parthiban, a fellow Kona owner found this place with convenient sockets located at a few feet away from the cars, but unfortunately wasn't working for some reason. 320 km to go.
200 up just outside Salem. Great efficiency so far, thanks to a Volvo bus who was doing a steady 90 kph. Tagged on to him and saved a lot of energy just staying in his wake.
Stopped for dinner at Sai Sangeet just before Krishnagiri, after climbing up Thoppur ghats. Elevation increase of almost 250mt in less than 7-8 km increased the consumption rapidly. 170km to go from this point.
Home free, and safe! Thanks to the Volvo guy who allowed me to sit in his aero wake, I could make it comfortably despite higher consumption. Else I'd have had to top up some where for about 15-20 min with my 20A charger.
Proof that you can do 350km/day in an EV,in India, comfortably. This is how a huge chunk of drivers in India use their car.Commute 2000km/month,or 350 km/day-Drive,reach your destination, plug in,wake up&drive again. One small step in an EVs,will really be a giant leap!
