Incoming book squee thread!

UF with romance. (full transparency: I did the series bible)

The Adept Universe by Meghan Ciana Doidge. 4 series set in the same world, with lots of crossover. And it has everything I love!

It starts with the Dowser series and our first MC Jade. She’s the unlikely hero. A witch who bakes cupcakes, loves sparkles and shiny things. Ambitions do not include saving the world.

But lots of secrets come to the surface, about her past and present, and she’s not left with much of a choice. As the series progresses, she accidentally collects other magical misfits to her, creating a found family and one of my favorite female friendships in fiction.

I wasn’t ready to move away from her and her group when it was time to move on to the Oracle series. But I did and met Rochelle, our next MC. She’s a total 180 from Jade. Much darker.

In the human foster system since birth, never knowing the magical world. Her violent visions were believed to be a mental illness. The series starts the day she becomes an adult and can leave the system.

She doesn’t believe she’ll ever find love or friendship, all she wants is freedom. But she finds it all as she uncovers the magical world.

She’s a survivor and will cross lines others may not because of that. I adore her. And then she meets up with Jade!

Then comes the Reconstructionist. Wisteria. Tbh, I didn’t want to move on to her. (notice a theme?) I was very happy with Jade and Rochelle. Wisteria is introduced in earlier books. She’s straight-laced, professional, and a little cold.

But it only took a few pages for me to be fully invested. Wisteria’s coldness was built to protect herself after a childhood of hell (CW: past trauma child abuse, all kinds).

There’s only 2 people in the world who Wisteria loves. And when those are threatened? Welp. Nothing is a line too far then. She is a total badass.

Then! Ensemble cast time! Jade, Rochelle, and Wisteria (with those they love) working together to defeat the big bad. Angst! Peril! Girl gang! This was my jam.

But then it was time to move on to the Amplifier series. And, again, I didn’t want to. There was no mention of this MC in the previous books. But then I realized what I was reading.

Genetically engineered magic-using supersoldiers.

5 supersoldiers, raised in captivity, made to be weapons. Emma, the MC, as their center. Never knowing love or kindness. Now free. With a hint of morality chain. And that’s where I’m at right now in the series. And it is EVERYTHING.

Oh, and for my romance-needing friends, Jade, Rochelle, and Wisteria all have established HFN/HEA with their love interests as of the beginning of the Amplifier series.
