Government proposals for new immigration system essentially reflect MAC recommendations I discussed here.

A few further points..(1/6?)

Key features : salary threshold £25.6K (more for higher paid occupations; less for new entrants). Lower threshold (in effect) for shortage occupations and those with PhDs. As MAC said, not really a "points based system" in Australian (or any meaningful) sense (2/6)
For NHS and education implication (no detail) is skill threshold will apply but no salary threshold (as per MAC) because there are national pay scales. Will significantly ease pressures - but no such flexibility for social care (3/6).
Will immigration fall? Last week HO claimed "immediately reduce low-skilled immigration by 90K". False - most of big fall in EU migration *has already happened*. Net migration from EU now close to 0 - new stats 27 Feb. New system *might* reduce further but probably not much (4/6)
Overall impacts - most sectors (NHS, education, finance, business services, HE) should be able to live with this. Big challenges for social care, food processing, construction, catering/hospitality (some regions). *But* implementation/delivery absolutely key... (5/6)
*If* Govt/HO delivers on promises to make new system quicker, more efficient, less bureaucratic, more user-friendly this *could* be liberal, broadly economically sensible system (as per my article). But HO faces *huge* challenges and record doesn't inspire confidence. (6/6) END

@montie As I've written before, there is a direct link between likes of Montgomerie, Scruton and Douglas Murray and the white nationalist ideology of "Tommy Robinson" et al; the former give intellectual respectability to the latter.

For those sceptical about economic modelling of the long-term impacts of Brexit - this is *precisely* what our models predict, and exactly what virtually every credible mainstream economist expected.

Note: this does not mean "lost jobs" nor recession - that's *not* what the long-term models predict.

It *does" mean less trade (both imports and exports), lower investment, hence lower productivity, slower growth in income per head and hence less money for public services.

Had the proposed new system for EU citizens wanting to come to the UK existed when I was keen to make my home here, I would not have been able to come. #Immigration #WhitePaper 1/
But I probably wouldn't have wanted to come even if I had met the salary threshold. Because this isn't a particularly attractive offer. This will deter skilled people. 2/
And this even less so. Why on earth would anyone ever choose to do this? Instead of being able to build one's life in the UK, people would just be sojourners, annually replaced because of the plan for a 'cooling off' period. 3/
