Prediction: not one political reporter will write about the irony of Bernie Sanders wanting government to pay for universal child care given that he himself chose to go on unemployment and run for office in VT for 8 years while his own son lived with this single mom on welfare.
It's always been clear how entitled Bernie Sanders has felt for government paying for him to do whatever he wanted in his life even though he had a UChicago degree and a small inheritance from his father (about $70k in today's dollars).
Yet, the mother of Bernie's child was not afforded the same luxuries Sanders had living on unemployment and pursuing a political career while she faced housing discrimination as the mother of a young child in VT in 1974.
Not sure why reporters seem so squeamish about bringing this up. Bernie has made it taboo for decades. He didn't even allow the biographer of his life as Mayor of Burlington (released in 1991) to mention that he even HAD a son in the book he worked with.
For decades Sanders allowed the press to misrepresent who Levi's mother actually IS (not correcting that his mother was a product of his first marriage instead of being born out of wedlock). Even his first wife has stated how surprised she was to read that and not see him fix it.
Of course, this has NOTHING to do with the close, loving relationship Sanders has with his son - but it does show a man so driven to build his political career that he'd ignore the very real needs of his child who had to live on welfare because of it.
If more parents knew that Bernie had made this choice for nearly a decade then they would find it disqualifying. It was a moral decision Sanders made to put himself and his career ahead of his own child in his 30s. Reporters might not hold him accountable but GOP certainly will.
Also, ask yourself if you could do the same to your child. Seriously. I know I couldn't have - but then again, most mothers don't have the privilege of running off and pursuing careers and fame the way men do at the expense of their children. /End
