There's a lot to learn about Bernie Sanders from his 1990 campaign for a House Seat against Peter Smith the R-incumbent. This article from July 1990 makes a lot of interesting points about how abrasive Sanders is and doesn't support Democrats.
The 1990 article clearly states the strange alliances being formed between former Democratic candidates and Peter Smith and then "on the other hand, Sanders and the right-wing National Rifle Association members who will do anything to defeat Smith - including voting for Sanders.
Bernie's Dem opponent in the 1988 election Poirier chooses to endorse the Republican incumbent Smith because of a incident in 1988 when Sanders refused to say who he'd vote for if he wasn't no the ballot that year. Poirier had said Sanders and Smith had said Poirier.
This snub of Poirier bothered him since he felt they were the most aligned in terms of their progressive values. "For the first time I really realized Bernie's whole thing is Bernie, not the issues," Poirier stated.
Poirier went onto say, "I have felt for a long time that Bernie's abrasiveness and his inability to work with other people - will come home to roost."

This statement was made in 1990. Barney Frank said the same thing in 2016. Hillary Clinton said it recently.
In 1990 Sanders also argued for more free stuff including the federal government paying for free public transportation (buses and vans) across the nation and more congressional control of the automotive industry. Editorials at the time pointed to issues ppl had paying for it.
Also in 1990 Bernie didn't know how to pay for what he was asking for. The budget numbers he provided didn't add up.

Sound familiar?
In 1990 Senator Leahy among other Democrats said they would only support Sanders if he stopped bashing Democrats whom he had for years argued as "indistinguishable."

Sound familiar?
Sanders got into trouble for paying his campaign workers as consultants and not employees thus avoiding payroll taxes. It was a scandal at the time and Sanders had to pay back taxes to rectify it. So much for protecting the working class!

Reminder Bernie was almost 50 in 1990.
