It's #AshWednesday, so I'm thinking about the church year. Here's my thought: the church year is good, but it is a good *tool*.
The church year is not the gospel, but it can be a a wonderful tool for keeping your mind *fixed* on the gospel—and hence, fixed on Christ.
The point of the church year is not to observe the church year. The point of the church year is to always be remembering the life of Jesus, to always be reminding yourself of Him and His goodness.
If you let it, the church year will annually focus your mind on the Incarnation, on Jesus' ministry, on His death, resurrection, and ascension, and on the coming of the Holy Spirit.
If you let it do that, the church year is operating as a good and useful tool in your life.
We humans are so forgetful. We so easily turn our eyes away from Jesus. It's really, really good for us to have regular reminders of who He is and what He's done.
And that's what the church year is for. It should never be an end in itself. But it can be a really helpful means of telling (and retelling, and retelling) the wonderful works of our Savior.
