On days like today I think about how Black folks have been in this country for over four centuries & have only have the state-sanctioned right to vote for 55 yrs.

I think of my grandparents, who grew up in Florida & Mississippi when none of this was guaranteed.

It still isn't.
There are millions of ppl voting today who were prohibited by the govmnt from voting for *decades* of their lives.

It's a reminder that this isn't just black & white photos in your history books or a documentary on PBS, these folks are still here. They experienced it first hand.
I think often of this 1964 Fannie Lou Hamer speech to the DNC:

"Is this America, the land of the free...where we have to sleep with our telephones off of the hooks because our lives be threatened daily, because we want to live as decent human beings"
