Here's a quick story about how things can work out for the good.
In 2019, I was working on prison reform based on concerns constituents shared and communications I had been receiving on Twitter (still working on this). I was also continuing my work on #Redistricting reform....
Then I found the @NPR podcast #CodeSwitch and heard one that illustrated how the two issues intersect in Prison Gerrymandering. I was like, oh nah, this can't continue! So I then brought on a few folks that could help me work on it, and we did, for months....
Once we got to Session, I lobbied legislators on its importance and helped explain it and dispel myths. We had great conversations. And now, ending prison #gerrymandering is in all 5 #redistricting bills being discussed this Session....
Come to find out, this work dates back to 2011, before I was in the House! Thank you Sen. Janet Howell, Sen. John Edwards, Del. Sam Rasoul, Del. Lee Ware, and Former Del. Riley Ingram for laying the groundwork for this year's HB1255 which is headed to the full Senate this week!
I've learned quite a few things this Session. 1.) When legislators get around a table, without outside noise, we can often get to a really great product!
2.) You can't be too quick to take credit for your work because many others may have started the work before you...
3.) Nothing ever happens in a vacuum. That one conversation you've been meaning to have might be the catalyst for something big. So go on, take the first step. It just may set off the domino effect we need to get to the changes we seek!
