There are different processing centers in the brain. Some are newer than others. The trick is to get the mind to increase blood flow to the more primitive areas (like fight or flight). Those areas are great at certain things. Thinking objectively and clearly is not one of them.
If we can focus, get our emotions better and calm our mind, that helps us think better. Watching our muscle tension and breathing helps.

If you see someone using tactics meant to emotionally manipulate you, they are up to something. If they were not, there would be no reason to use such cheap tactics.
