Starting an open-ended conversation for faculty who are taking their courses online in a hurry. What are tips and tricks? What challenges are you facing? #econtwitter
I recently had to give some lectures remotely. I used powerpoint, taking screen shots of pdfs and pasting onto ppt where needed. Ppt has very, very easy to use feature where you record a video w/ webcam, separate videos for each slide, and they autoplay in present mode.
The file size was huge but ppt has option to compress them. I still had to break up ppt's into smaller chunks. I liked recording separately slide by slide and being able to rearrange and edit modularly, could change slide after finishing video, etc.
I saved a version without the video so that people could download and save something smaller as well.
My kid has been taking a zoom class where bandwidth issues arise. He suggests using "manage participants" tab on zoom where you see a list of all people, and ask them to hit "yes" to indicate all is well at regular intervals; generally using this tab speeds up communication a lot
He also suggests that the instructor use gallery view depending on class size, to see all students in their own box, and also use the "raise hand" feature.
My own experience suggests that if bandwidth problem, call in via landline for audio. Then if video freezes or glitches, you still have audio. Zoom makes it easy to choose whether audio is by phone or internet. Explain steps to students in advance.
