@NuffieldCollege and the Econ dept @UniofOxford have 3-year post-docs which offer early career researchers the opportunity to develop their research portfolio within a leading Economics department and strengthen their future position in the academic job market.
Responsibilities: 1. Research with a view to publication in leading journals; 2. Developing & managing a research programme independently; 3. Teaching up to 20 hours of lectures or 30 hours of TA-format teaching per annum; light admin of teaching/research, & organising seminars.
It is essentially a great opportunity to continue your PhD education and research while bridging the gap to the full academic job market.

Find a place you are comfortable writing in and a working routine that works for you. You will be writing a lot, so comfort and an overall routine are really important.
Have a clear overall structure in mind regarding how the final thesis will look like. This is important in terms of giving each of your chapters a coherent structure. Of course things will change as you write, but having an overall blueprint that you can stick to is important.

Why Authenticity Matters

Five years ago I was reeling from the sudden death of my father, when I was called into a meeting and told by my pastor that I was being "released" after only 5 months at this new church.
My outspokenness on matters of sexuality and race and nationalism had proven to be a liability. Even though I knew it was coming and knew I was probably speaking and writing myself out of a job, it was still devastating. So much loss in so little time.
I was without my father, without a job, and without any community here in a new city with my wife and two young children—and feeling like calling it a day. I decided rather than move or give up, to just keep doing what I was doing: loving people and speaking honestly.

A few thoughts, but looking forward to hearing from others:

1) Don't do an econ PhD for the title. It's too long and intense for that. Do it only if you are interested in doing research and see the PhD process itself as a job that you might enjoy.
2) Many experience 1sr year (i.e. 8 months) as the worst, but then with field classes and research it gets closer to what you enjoy. Once in, dont quit because you don't enjoy the first year, that is not at all representative of how the rest will be.

OK. It's happening, and I can finally talk openly about it (a thread).

I have decided to transfer from my #PhD into a #Masters degree. I'm currently writing my thesis - I'm due to submit in October.

And I want to talk about it, because we don't talk about this enough.
This isn't a decision I've made lightly, or impulsively. It's due to a plethora of factors, including personal, project and professional reasons. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time, and something I should have thought more about before I even started my PhD.
I like studying. I like learning. I loved university, honours was challenging, but a PhD was the next logical step. I took a little time off (not enough)-but getting a scholarship early pretty much confirmed I'm be moving on to the next part of my academic life.

Across the world, many mothers struggle to manage work & family.

This persists if mums despondently accept the status quo, chastising their own failings, rather than expecting & demanding shared social responsibility.

This fantastic new book offers radical hope.
If we can’t even envision alternatives, we may not even ask for more.

Instead mums cut back on career ambitions, blame themselves for failing impossible ideals, & step back from top-jobs.

So it’s not enough for academics to just highlight the flawed status quo.
