Thread. Some of the best political/rhetorical advice I've ever heard is a Pacino line from Glengarry Glen Ross: "“Never open your mouth until you know what the shot is." And AOC always knows what the shot is.
Obviously, AOC's version of "the shot" right now is very specific, right? She's a high-profile Bernie endorser with huge social media reach. And if there's inside skinny to be had about the status of Bernie-Warren stuff, she likely has at least some of it. High stakes, high info.
So when AOC tweets this, you can be safe in assuming that it's at the very least consistent with the goals of the Bernie campaign as she understands them. At a minimum, consistent.
Which is not to say that everybody needs to follow AOC's lead on this—nobody's expecting that. It'd be stupid to expect it, stupid to do it. But to get in her face about it? To get in the face of Warren supporters in her mentions who cosign the tweet? What's the play there?
(That's a rhetorical question. This time. Though when people have done similar stuff in my mentions in the past, I've asked them—dozens of times, at this point—how they think it helps Bernie win. And I've never gotten an answer that makes any sense.)
Electoral organizing, particularly federal-level electoral organizing, is a very particular kind of organizing, one that involves a LOT of working nicely with people who don't share all of your values and goals, and who share pretty much none of your aesthetics.
And it's a hell of a lot easier to alienate a stranger than it is to bring them over to your side. A zillion times easier.
So when I say that sitting on your hands is sometimes the best move? When I say I do more to make the world better with the tweets I don't send than the ones I send? When I say you should never open your mouth until you know what the shot is? That's what I'm talking about.
