I opened each of my classes with a coronavirus discussion yesterday. Began with what we know about origins and spread, putting it in historical context, connecting to class materials.
Then did a few minutes on how to limit spread—handwashing, social isolation, general preparedness. Gave specifics on what we know and don't, who's at greatest risk, when and how to wash hands, etc.
Then talked about what we're likely to do if the college closes—what protocols will be if it's a two-week pause as some schools have done, what my thinking is if we have to go online-only for a longer period of time.
Took questions and comments at every step. All this took 30 minutes in one class, 40 in another. In the third, we ate up the entire 75 minutes.
There's a lack of access to information out there—some people are getting good information about where things stand and how to protect themselves and their loved ones, but others aren't. If you have a several-times-a-week podium that puts you in front of lots of people, use it.
BTW, CUNY has an information hub for the virus set up. It's pretty good. cuny.edu/coronavirus/
